Sending revolver (Colt) back to manufacturer in US...info?

I want to send my Colt revolver back to Colt in the US for some work...what hoops do I have to jump through?
Do I have to export it down there/import it back?
Can I fill out the correct paperwork and mail it from Canada?
Any info would be appreciated.

A call to the CFP might lead you in the right direction, it's toll free and their web site said for more information give them a call. The web site also mentioned that you can't send it via Canada Post.
 
Go to the US Dept of Justice, the Bureau of Alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives. All non resident guns [consumers] must have their permission to import firearms into the USA. And you have to have a good reason. The allowable reasons are listed on the applications. I could be wrong but most ATFE permits are for hunting and competitions, not repair. And don't even think of trying to smuggle the gun into the US or back into Canada. Severe penalties apply for each.
 
Colt has a ColtCanada representation.
It might be better to deal with them.
If gun needs to be sent to the US for
extra work, they have the ways and means and know-how.

I haven't dealt with them.
But, in my case, Ruger's and S&W's Canadian warranty centres
(two different ones) did a great job.
 
Thanks for the input guys.

A Colt Python revolver is a very tricky piece to work on...very few people will even touch it, and I sure don't want just anyone "having a go at it" that's not totally qualified. I have so far had no luck finding anyone in Canada to work on it. Hopefully I'll be able to send down south for work...legally of course!

Speak to Colt Canada and let them send it to the US for you. I can assure that this route may be less complicated.
 
Colt Canada responded to my email...no help there, they referred me to Colt in the USA...they (Colt Canada) only deal with military and LE, which makes sense if you've seen their website.

Thumbs down on Colt Canada.. they should try to help even if they deal with other customers only. Boo
 
Bongobob can't be the only canuck looking to do this (or who has done this) in the last few years. Colt USA should be able to step him through the process.
 
I purchased a new Colt Rail Gun in Canada,been having a problem with Ambi-Safety,contacted Colt USA and Dealer in QC that I purchased it from,the Dealer was very helpfull,however to get it repaired,I have to pay for 4 shipping charges, from BC to dealer in QC,from dealer to Importer/Warranty Center in Canada,then return from Warranty /Importer back to dealer in QC,then from Dealer back to me in BC

Told them to forget it,have repaired it myself

Purchased a second Rail Gun in USA,if it has to go back,and for my Canadian Rail Gun in the future, I am just going to pay Jason at IRUNGUNS to deal with the Import/Export and get some extra work done in Colts Custom Shop(when they will take new work on)to justify the expense

I have looked into an individual sending it to US for Repair w/ ATF,State Department DDTC Response Team and Colt USA,its as clear as mud,so rather than risk it being grabbed at either Customs due to misinformation,I will pay to have it done and then no worries

Man theres really no one in canada who can do work on Pythons? This reminds me of those CDN Porsche guys that send there guages to North Hollywood speedo when there is a guy in Toronto who works on VDO guages and does just as good of a job. Maybe try looking up custom shops in different provinces and call them and see if they've ever worked on pythons. I just cant fathom having to send a gun to the states for repair when there has to be someone here who can do it.
