Day 1 with my brand new Tavor

I finally bought my Tavor this week after a lot of humming and hawing. It was only a matter of time: I love short rifles, I love modern rifles, I love bullpups, and my father served in the IDF so I take special pride in owning something he might be using if he was still in the service today.

I always like breaking a firearm down before I use it so I know what makes it tick, and TVPP was kind enough to spend the afternoon with me showing me the ins and outs of the Tavor. We broke it down, frog lubed it, and then headed to the range to play and sight it in.

The range was a blast. I love the balance, ergonomics and the predictability of both the trigger reset, and hitting an empty mag. TVPP pointed out the latter to me and once I shot a few mags, it was very easy to tell when they were dry -- a nice clean "pop" I guess, rather than a push. Groupings were solid out the gate and I didn't have a single malfunction or anything close to it.

The only slight weirdness was at the end of the shooting session: I fired 20 rounds in quick succession and when I was done, I noticed some smoke coming from the barrel and vents. We're thinking perhaps it was some packing oil that finally got hot enough to burn off. I don't feel too concerned.

Best part: can't wait to take it outdoors! Woot woot.

I only have one crap phone photo so far. I was having too much fun shooting yesterday to take photos. :D

Note: I've moved the EOtech back a couple notches since this photo, and removed the flip ups.

Definitely a solid shooting session! Should have snapped some photos of your sighting in groups!

It was great to take a look at the new Gen 2 Tavor and actually spend some time shooting it. We definitely get a nicer factory flattop rail than the American's do. They essentially lose their front sight if they try to remove it!

I'm starting to realize that I need the QD riser for my Razor red-dot. What went from feeling "good and close" before now feels "too low"

It definitely felt low, but I love how small the Razor is. I think it'll be dandy once you give it another cm or so of height.

I really liked your muzzle brake, and may have to look into one in the semi-near future. Recoil on this rifle is minimal, but it does seem to push a bit to the right. This sensation was definitely reduced when I shot TVPP's vs mine.

I like the eotech because I have pretty poor vision and the outer circle helps immensely in guiding my eye to the target, as opposed to a single red dot. I do find though that if I don't shoot for a while, I quickly lose my ability to group effectively with both eyes open, but again that's an artifact of my vision. Just gotta keep up with the practice.

Congrats on the purchase and thanks for the great thread.
Took mine out today for the first time. Shot around 100 rds (not in rapid succession_ :)

I also cleaned and lubed like crazy last night before firing.

after about 50 rds, I began getting a click click (FTF). Rocked the handle back, it ejected the unspent round. Then it would fire in succession again. Did this regardless of using a 5/30 mag, or a Lar15 loaded with anywhere from 8-10.
I sure got a few interesting looks when I'd fire 5 and then keep going up to 10.
the kick was more than expected, as was the kaboom. But with the awesome weight and balance, extremely easy to get back on target at 100 yards. Wish the 50 would have been open for me to sight in. Next time I'll go out early and use the iron sights at 50 before moving to the Elcan Specter.

All in all, an enormously fun morning.

Yes, they continued. Each time I inserted a new mag, partially or completely full.
I was using Federal, Remington, and Hornady top of the shelf stuff for all. It happened regardless of brand. I figured I'll give it another good cleaning, maybe try a different oil (I used HOPPS). It "felt" as though the firing pin just isn't quite reaching the round. Perhaps it's jamming it in too far when I first insert mag and close the bolt.
Too bad I'm back in the city and won't be able to get out until Friday.

Congrats on a great gun. My local shop just got 5 in last week. It was all i could do to not take one home.
While i was at the shop an older gentleman (65+) came in spied the tavor, asked a few basic questions an says sold!
I wish i could drop $3000+ on a whim!

Sorry to hear. :( Maybe worth taking apart the BCG again and seeing if the firing pin is correctly seated (semi-circle facing down). The first time I did so, I was very glad to have TVPP there as reassembly was a little trickier than it is in my AR BCG, particularly that part of it.

Out of curiosity, what type and how many mags did you try?

I'm going to ck that and more tonite. Maybe it was just getting too hot? It only started after about 50 rds.
Thanks for the tip.

Congrats on the Tavor! I really like mine, and I am currently running the Norinco ammo from CanAm through it. Can't beat the price for 1600 rounds!

Cheers
Jay

I took mine out on Friday for it's preliminary run. The ergonomics and handling were excellent and there were no mechanical problems of any kind! Even mag changes weren't as awkward as I'd of thought.

Now the trigger....what an abortion. Feels like it's made of sponge.

Whoever the buffoon is who designed it should be charged with crimes against humanity.

Overall, I'm a fairly happy camper - but the first company that comes up with an aftermarket trigger will get my money ASAP.

Congrats on the Tavor, sounds like a good range trip.

The more good things I hear about them, the more I want one. I got the chance to put a few mags through one a couple of months ago and really liked it. The trigger was a little odd, but I assume that is something you get used to?
