Alright, as the title suggests, it's time to put my new RPAL to work. I've been looking around locally, and I think I've got my picks for final contenders.

I'm after a 9mm, full size gun (big guy, big hands), for general plinking/target work. I may get into IPSC and such later on, we'll see. Max budget is ~$1000, preferably less.

So, I'm looking at 3 guns, mainly:

CZ 75 BD, pre-owned but in great shape at Cabela's Gun Library. M&P 9, new. Or a Beretta 92A1, also new.

I've heard good things about all three, and they all feel good in my giant mitts (the Beretta fits me slightly better, but not much difference really). Overall I really like all three guns, and the prices are close enough to not make any huge difference.

So what do you guys say? Any clear favorites? Should I avoid any of them? Anything at all to put one or another ahead of the pack? Any other options out there I should be considering aside from these locally available ones?

If they're all equal, I think the CZ wins on price alone, but it's a really close call. What do you guys think?

I'm in the same boat as you.... Trying to decide between the Beretta and the m&p 9... It's tough personally for me I'm leaning towards the Beretta because I have big hands also.... Both good guns though.

Shoot all 3 and buy the one you shoot the best.

If that is not an option then go with the CZ. I bought a CZ and so should you. If I were to admit that there is another gun out there better than a CZ then maybe I made a mistake and that's not possible.

Did you check out the CZ SP01 at WSS ?

Was just at WSS today, and that CZ walked away yesterday, apparently.

I'd love to, but the only place to do that around here is xtreme gun shooting center, and they're saying it'd cost me over $400 to do so (do people REALLY go there, at that kind of price tag?!?). Not happening - at that price I'll just buy one, instead!

I'm very interested in the Arsenal Strike One, too... But it's yet to actually show up for sale, so I really can't say anything there...

$400 to test them out? That is robbery. Just get a Shadow that's what I did. Truth is if you really like all 3 you'll probably end up with all of them at some point. I am already eyeing up that M&P Pro that I decided not to get in favor of the Shadow. I can't have 1 centre fire pistol in the safe surrounded by rimfires he is going to need a friend.

Go with the M&P - cheap, reliable as all hell, and only one trigger pull to learn. On top of that a monkey could 'smith the M&P and parts are cheap as borscht. The M&P will serve as well for casual shooting as for IPSC/IDPA and holsters are available from all major suppliers.

Out of that list I would choose the M&P and get the range kit. Feels great in the hands, not too expensive, great gun.

Given your budget and choices, I'd go with the Smith & Wesson M&P 9 Pro Range Kit. It comes with (IIRC) a holster, a dual mag pouch, and 2 magazines. Saves some money right off the top.

Out of your 3 choices I recommend the CZ but instead of a BD model look for a Shadow or 85 combat. The trigger's are better. In a very close 2nd, my choice would be the Beretta 92A1. I tend to think the Beretta would fit you better due to it having a thicker grip. Once you put a D spring in it the trigger is improved greatly. Skip the M&P IMO. I've seen many issue's with these pistols that totally turned me off from them, but hey, it's your choice after all.

The "Pro" won't make the Production 5# trigger pull, take the standard version if you plan on using it for IPSC

says who???

it IS on the approved production list and tons of shooters use it.

Says many guys who got bumped in Open shooting level 3 matches. S&W does not have a part to put the trigger over 5# and after some use, the trigger lighten under 5#. Some are still using it shooting Standard Minor. In USPSA trigger pull does not matter, IPSC does.

I'm a new shooter and own a cz75 and m&p 9. Both feel real good in the hands but shooting wise I really like the cz. The m&p I'm not too good with the heavy trigger so I tend to shoot it low left. The 75 trigger is super light and is lot easier for me.

The M&P is the only one of that lot that I would consider. My personal pick of that lot is a glock 17, if you need a bigger grip, get a gen 4 with adjustable backstrap.
