Just ordered an SKS and picking up another, I want to mount a scope on each of them and want peoples opinions on the ease and the function of the scopes and mounts. Pros and cons of Gas tube mount, Scout Mount,NcStar Tri Mount. and any other options. I will say I do want to change one to a Monte Carlo Stoc by ATI and keep another fairly stock but add an extension to the but plate to make shooting more comfortable. Cannot wait to hear your responses!!!
Cheers

BC Tactical. Rock solid, can stay on the rifle forever and holds zero forever. No gunsmithing needed.

I have tried several different versions of the receiver cover ones, BUT, I found everyone of them have enough movement on the front area that your zero changes ! I think the model that attatches to the rear sight will be the best option and save you a ton of time and wasted funds like I have done.

After doing a TON of research, I have come to the following conclusions.

BEST - Have a machine shop build you a "stronger" version of Choat's side mounted mount that mounts on both sides of the receiver an still lets you still able to use your Iron/Tangent sight. This option also allows you to still take down the rifle like normal an no need to re-sight your scope (that is if you left your scope on the mount during take-down of course).

OK -
Choate side Drill & Tap mount, allows you to still use stripper clips. Cons are it's not very strong, would break easy if you dropped the rifle on the scope, only mounts on one side, an obstructs your line of sight to your old Tangent/iron sight, even more so if you add a shell deflector.

Scout Scope = Replaces your tangent sight, great for a little red dot. Cons are you lose the tangent. Again not very strong.

UTG Leapers Tri Rail for the front - This big ass thing works well, an even has a sight channel so you can still use your tangent sight, con is that it prevents the "tool-less" break down option an you have to re-sight your scope once you put it all back together. This hulky thing is compatible with the wood stock as well as the after market stocks from Tapco or ATI.

WORST -
Any of those "dust/receiver cover mounts, utter rubbish. They take a TON of filing, an will not hold zero. NC star makes the worst an UTG Leapers versions are no better.

In my opinion. The Molot or Tula side rails are the most "accurate" for the SKS. But, I am a purist. Russian rifle must use Russian mounts for Russian optics. Too bad Czech optics are too damned expensive. I would be all over a Meopta scoped vz 58.

I have the identical setup and cracked my TRS-25 from a shell ejecting. Just a heads up to anyone with this setup. At a bare minimum move the TRS all the way forward on the Pic rail. I'm looking at the ejection mod.

For an sks i would say it goes:
Choate or other similar side mount>scout mount on rear sight>dust cover mount>gas tube mount>holding it against the side of the receiver with your hand

This is my preferred scope mounting/optic for the SKS.

- It's mounted to the side of the receiver
- Can be removed then re-attached without loss of zero
- Allows uses of iron sights
- Allows use of stripper clips
- Compact
- Good eye relief
- Clear optics with German post
- Built tough and of quality manufacture (built by a military contractor)
- Period correct (yes, I am a traditionalist and Weaver/Picatinny rails look... off on 50s rifle in my eyes)
and
- Russian made! well... Ukrainian. Close enough as it was once part of the Soviet Union.

I milled the base flat and blued it.

Here it is on the rifle. Well sort of, lol. I just zip-tied it temporarily to find the most comfortable position. Still looking for a gunsmith, or a drill press that does not wobble relentlessly.

Just a practice stock for future reference. I think the SKS looks slick with this set up.

Only issue with this set up I can foresee is a dirty objective lens.

I found if I put the RDS too far forward on the scout mount I couldn't clear the arm to disassemble the gas assembly.
