Got my short list for first pistol... Input/opinions??

I don't have one, nor want one. You can argue until the end of times but the fact is the trigger pull will go under 5# at some point. You can think S&W USA do not know about the guns they make and that you know better... I don't know, but the fact is the same, if the guy wants to shoot IPSC, he will be better serve with another gun than an M&P Pro because of all the hassle that comes with the trigger pull issue.

I didn't say anything of the sort - there goes that reading issue of yours again - I said that they won't sell them to your buddy. The M&P Pro is sold in Mass, the law in Mass states quite clearly that pistols must have an 8lb trigger, no less. Take a look at an M&P schematic, one part number for those parts in 9+40+357, no part numbers beyond the slide, front sight and barrel for the Pro. Additionally, some judicious work on the sear trip portion of the trigger bar will both increase pull weight and shorten the break. God, this is like talking to a liberal; no clue, but still pushing.

As said, I don't care about plastic guns so I won't look at their diagram. I just know 2 guys who got bumped in Open division using a stock M&P Pro, one of them called S&W USA to have a solution to the issue. The fact is USPSA does not have the trigger pull test and USA is by far a bigger market than the Canadian one shooting IPSC. They did not have anything to suggest either in gunsmithing or parts replacement since the non-Pro and Pro don't have all parts swappable and producing "Canadian parts" was not an option.

And stop talking about yourself as a Liberal.. you certainly worth better than that. ;);)

Whichever one points better. Close your eyes and point the pistol at the target then open your eyes. Buy whichever points the closest, as its the one you'll shoot the most accurately. My vote is cz hands down, the slide glides inside the rail making it the most accurate , mind you you have to be a heckuva shooter to appreciate that type of accuracy in a pistol

M & P 9mm with Range Kit. Best value for money and you get everything to start. Changeable backstraps to fit your hands.. Great value.

I think this sums it up, really. Much as I love the Beretta and the CZ, for the money I'll spend, and considering the pile of accessories it includes... I'm going with the M&P.

And as most of you have said, the others will probably join it eventually!

Thanks for all the input, guys!

Alright, as the title suggests, it's time to put my new RPAL to work. I've been looking around locally, and I think I've got my picks for final contenders.

I'm after a 9mm, full size gun (big guy, big hands), for general plinking/target work. I may get into IPSC and such later on, we'll see. Max budget is ~$1000, preferably less.

So, I'm looking at 3 guns, mainly:

CZ 75 BD, pre-owned but in great shape at Cabela's Gun Library. M&P 9, new. Or a Beretta 92A1, also new.

I've heard good things about all three, and they all feel good in my giant mitts (the Beretta fits me slightly better, but not much difference really). Overall I really like all three guns, and the prices are close enough to not make any huge difference.

So what do you guys say? Any clear favorites? Should I avoid any of them? Anything at all to put one or another ahead of the pack? Any other options out there I should be considering aside from these locally available ones?

If they're all equal, I think the CZ wins on price alone, but it's a really close call. What do you guys think?

I own the M&P in .40 s&w and the beretta 92a1. I would suggest the 92a1 for your first gun. It shoots nice and accurate. Great feeling grip. Strips down super easy and fast. The M&P is a very close tie especially if you buy the range kit. Super good deal.

That doesnt make it more accurate, that lowers the bore axis which helps reduce muzzle flip. It also reduces the surface area that you have to grip. The cz like the 1911 is a heavy pistol, that soaks up a lot of the recoil, making them soft shooting. It also covers up for crap shooting form. The lighter polymers don't. If you are shooting like crap it will shoot like crap. A point TDC demonstrated to me on sunday. My groups were utter crap, stray shots all over the place, predominantly low left(flinching like an abused child). Adjusted the grip, focused on proper trigger squeeze and I got semi respectable groups.

Slightly above your price limit, but I would suggest strongly considering the Sig P226 TACOPS. My wife and I started IPSC with M&P9's and they were great to begin with, but there are definite drawbacks as well. She's since moved to open and I now shoot standard, but I like to play in production every once in a while as well. The TACOPS is a great gun, has the fibre optic front site and mag well, and the package comes with 4 mags (definitely get the 20 rounders as the 10 round mags are a bit short for the mag well!).

A bit more than $1000, but a rock solid gun that will last a lifetime and shoots great. I also personally prefer the decocker to manually dropping the hammer for the first shot as I've seen two DQ's having this go wrong as an RO.

Ask for an opinion, get a million answers..

Best to try out and see what you want. I went through a number of pistols before deciding what I like, the rest sit in the safe.
My current pref is 226 w/SRT

I also have the m&p, cz75 - 85 & sp01, g17, 229/srt, and hk usp.
