Husqvarna 9.3 - need help please

[/URL][/IMG]I just purchased a 9.3 x 62 Husqvarna. I understand it has been re-chambered from 9.3 x 57.

Serial number shows that it is 248##, so appears to be 1939, based on a list I found on CGN.

There is no model number that I can find. The barrel has the stamp " Husqvarna Vapenfabriks A.B . Kal. 9.3 x 57.

I understand that the model "46" - m94 action, and models 146/246 - m98 action, overlapped in production years.

The bolt is really tight withdrawing the last couple of inches. The bolt handle has been replaced with a flat bolt.

Any ideas what model / action I have ?

From your S/N and pics it's a rechambered 1939 M/146, so it's a M/98 (obvious from the bolt shroud aspect). The production does not really overlap.

For the hard to pull bolt, check base screws for protruding and interfering with the bolt.

I was surprised that there was no model number.
Any opinion on this year versus others?
I will re-post as soon as I get it out to the range.
I am not handloading (yet) and have picked up some Hornady dangerous game 286 grain SP-RP locally for $46 a box, old stock that I managed to get before the new stock comes in at $65.

Nice Husqvarna! Here's a couple pics of mine. Basically the same as yours and has been rechambered to 9.3x62 as well. I added the custom bolt handle utilizing the original checkered knob, low scope safety, Bold trigger, Wolff striker spring, Brownells extra power mag spring, fully bedded the action, and drilled and tapped it for the scope mount.

Other than being pre WWII FNH K98 "commercial" action, there's nothing special with the year or model.
The 146 have the advantage of having a "standard" lenght magazine permitting the use of commercial ammo other than Norma, which the 46 and 46A lack (max OAL for these is more or less 3.260").
You can buy Prvi Partizan ammo (PPU) which is cheaper than most. There's also Sellier & Bellot who makes some but they are a bit pricier. Both shoot great and provide the same POI in two of my rifles.

As you can see, they make very nice hunting rifles and you can't be wrong with them.

Here is a 'dumb' question for you guys. How strong are these old 98 Husqvarna actions? I have owned Mausers before and really like them. I am tossing around ideas now for a 9.3x62 and a classic Mauser like the Husky98 is very appealing.

I am not a hotrodder when it comes to reloading but I would like to load it to 'full power' CIP specs (57kpsi) for certain hunting loads. Although I guess if I could get 'normal' ballisitics (286gr @ 2350fps, 235gr Rhinos at 2450fps) I will be happy and IIRC those ballisitics normally come in at less pressure than that in the 9.3x62.

Any comments? I know its a bit of a broad question and these actions have been used for high pressure rounds buts its still a topic I would like to learn more about.

The M98 is plenty strong enough to handle modern pressures. My Husky handles 286 gr bullets at 2350 with ease. Lots of guys get more speed out of the same platform, but I'm not sure why you'd bother.

I had this exact problem with a Husqvarna Hi-Power I got from Trade ex; scope base screw protruding just enough to catch. Quick enough fix, but can be annoying of a fellow doesn't know what the problem is and assumes it is something more serious than it is.

HVA made rifles based on their small ring M/38 action chambered in 9.3X62. Common ammunition used with these are, of course, Norma, which are ful member of CIP.... The M/98's are stronger and safer action than the M/38 and are commonly used with Magnum chamberings...

The protruding scope mount screw is a very common "problem" with many rifles...

If you get into reloading RE15 is tops although many use a Varget as well.Shot moose ,deer and a black wolf with mine.
 
My rifle pictured in this thread weighs 8.2lbs empty. My hand loads with 286gr Partitions chrony just under 2400fps. Recoil is what I describe as stout but certainly manageable. The hard plastic buttplate, minimal forend, and general stock design don't help with the recoil much either but I just go shoot something bigger and then when I go back to the 9.3x62 it feels like a pee shooter.;)
 
Well Mr. O.P., study'in that first photo shows three holes opposite the side you toss yer ammo into.
The center one from me eyes looks like it is a tad shinier that the rear and foremost ones.
Not the slightest ideer why those set screw looking butts are there.
Maybe drag a fingernail across them and see if they tend to wish to bend your nail a tad....?
