I tried searching and google search. And read through the hunting regulations.I would like to know if anybody knows if woodchucks ,ground hogs are legal legal to hunt in Manitoba Canada? I would like to try some long distance hunting with .223. I know they are protected in British Columbia, but can't find any info for Manitoba.

there are marmots in Manitoba, but we call them Woodchucks and as far as I know they are not a protected species

Marmots and woodchucks are two very different species...no question there are woodchucks/groundhogs but not marmots.

Indeed - the woodchuck aka groundhog IS a marmot... being of the marmot family Marmota monax. Other marmots are the Yellow-bellied (Marmota flaviventris) and Hoary Marmot (Marmota caligata) Prairie Dogs are a different genus

A woodchuck/ground hog is definitely a marmot.

Thanks for the replies, I have talked to a few advid hunters in the last couple of days and nobody is sure if they are legal to hunt in Manitoba. Iam surprised because It would sure make for a fun times in between big game hunting. I thought ground hog hunting would be more popular. Just to make sure I will have to contact Natural Resources.

"...woodchuck aka groundhog IS a marmot..." Among other names. You need to read your Provincial hunting regulations.
"...Prairie Dogs are..." A different flavour of rodent, unrelated to ground hogs.
