Looking to purchase my first AR-15 but am overwhelmed with all the different configurations/ brands. Want quality and reliability and something I can build on/ customize as I get more into it.
Looking for some input where to start, things to look for, avoid ect.
Thanks

My suggestion is to start with a norinco. Cheap and you can learn from it. Once you get familiar with the platform sell it and buy a better quality one. Gotta say, norinco aint even that bad for quality

I remember this feeling as well. The great thing about the ar is that its modular, so if you're not happy with something, its easily changed

Colt AR-15 H-Bar Sporter...First learn to shoot with them then you can can tacticool a cheaper one out to your specs...The Colt will always be worth what you pay for it...Just incase the AR platform turns out not to be your thing..But have fun and these days the selection is insane...Good Luck and welcome to the dark side !!!!!!

I run guns has some great deals right now. Quality USA made brands for less than a grand. Go basic, and work from there.

I was in the same boat awhile back, but decided to lay a few more dollars out to get Made in USA quality. Norcs are less expensive, and run fine, but a bit of searching and an extra $250 will get you a much nicer rifle in my humble opinion... I decided on a CORE15, and love it.

irunguns.ca is a site sponsor and has CORE15 Scouts in stock for $899. It's already in Canada and there are no other costs other than delivery and GST... Pretty sharp deal if you ask me!

Good luck!

I bought my first AR last week, a DD M4V5. I actually said yes to a consignment Norq all done up in Kool-Aid but it turned out it had an issue(usage caused) so I went straight for something I knew was the quality I wanted right out of the box.

I decided on a CORE15 product too. I got a used one on EE that was cherry. I couldn't be happier and it was a couple hundred more than a Norc with many aftermarket parts.

I was sold on the fact that they have a lifetime warranty, no matter who owns the rifle and usage. Will I bug them if there is a spring break in the trigger group?????

Not likely, but just knowing that they believe enough in their product to do this makes a statement.

Thanks for the info my friend bought a Norinco and had to send back after 50 rounds, I agree on paying a bit more for an American made starter platform and have been looking at the Core brand, with some others. I have to refrain from grabbing some of the $3000 + guns that some of the site sponsors post so tempting but looking forward to building as I go. I see this getting very expensive :p

Do you like rails, lazers, scopes, shiny expensive mall ninja stuff, or are you into a more basic rifle?

Full barrel so you can hit a 8 square foot target at 400 meters with irons or a handgun barrel so you can play SWAT team at the gun club?

Depending on what you want in the end, will give people a better idea of how you can get there and to help you.

I personally couldn't find what I wanted for sale anymore as everyone these days wants to play assaulter so I had to build my own.

Good point I want a basic gun for shooting small groups at long distance, there is enough mall ninjas at my local club. I want quality, accuracy, reliability and durability in a gun.

What did you end up building if I might ask?

I know your pain brother! I too have been reading about the AR for like at least a year now, and there are so many varieties/brands....handguards, stocks even magazines......
Its very confusing............but if you do enough research, it will start to gel. If you rush, you may be selling on the EE. Plenty of AR's on the EE!

Then the AR is not the answer. Buy a bolt gun and some good glass.

I kinda disagree. Depends on what the OP's definition is on long distance. Out to 300 yards with an AR15 can be quite accurate. However it typically means buying a purpose built rifle or assembling your own. Which can be quite pricey. I'm hoping my first build I'm working on now in its early stages will punch 1" groups or smaller at 200+ yards.

I want to shoot in the 100-200yrd range, an AR is something I have always had on my ( if I can afford one day list). Don't need for long distance sniping or killing zombies. Just enjoy the mechanics/ engineering of them and want to enjoy time at the range. I have been looking at the core line of rifles there seems to be a good supply and decent reviews on them.Good starting price point and be able to build on it as I get more into it.But if a BCM or Sig 516 came available I might jump on it.
