New S&W M&P 9 Woes

Yea ok. All mine seem to be sitting on top. 2 of the 4 seem to feel a bit sticky as I slide them in. One of the 2 now will sometimes drop free the more I keep playing with them. The other mag no matter what won't do more than pop out a few inches when I eject it.
Upper left: The portion of the slide stop lever that is visible just to the left of the feed ramp in the picture.

Actually the more I look now the second 2 mags when inserted do no have the slide catch sitting more off to the side then the ones that drop freely. With Slide open and drop the mag I seems to drop just below the slide release and sticks. Can't find a flashlight right now to see down inside clearly enough.

Huh. Weird.

I just got back from the range with my new M&P 9, and everything works smooth as silk. No issues whatsoever releasing any of the 3 mags, full or empty. Maybe they just had a bad batch of mags or something?

no problem with mine, I got the 45 frame, new trigger etc etc etc. All good so far. Going to the range today to shoot her some more.

S&W warranty will replace the followers, I'm quite certain. But they'll need you to send them in. I just went ahead and bought some followers from Brownells because I needed all my mags in working condition for competitions. If you bought yours locally, the retailer should replace them with stock on hand, so you don't have to wait.

Exactly. A buddy of mine is now without a gun for a few weeks because he had to send it all out to the warranty centre. Complete waste of time when you consider the $2 cost of a follower.

Went to the LGS in regard of the follower issue. They said its not covered by warranty and basically I have to purchase a new magazine or just use it as a spare. They also dont sell just the follower. :(

The problem with Brownell's on the 9mm followers is that they never have them in stock. You always have to backorder them and it takes forever to get.

Ahhhh... the local gun shop... Why pay less elsewhere when you can get crappy service here?

Sorry to hear it, that's lame. I'd bet that S&W will warranty it no problem. Sounds like the LGS is trying to pass the buck. Unless your problem is due to wear on the follower, and not an out-of-spec follower.

Contact Murray Charlton gunsmithing (S&W warranty center in Canada), they'll get you squared away. Of course, you'll have to send it in... While you're waiting, you'll have lots of time to write a polite letter to S&W explaining your perspective.

Called S&W and told them the situation. They did not directly answer me if its covered by warranty or not but did give me Murray Charlton's info. Whom seems to be the Canadian Warranty Repair Center for S&W. Unfortunately they are closed on Friday and the weekend. Will contact them next week and hopefully they do have the follower available.

At the LGS, the guy says the problem is caused by magazine body out of the spec and the follower seems fine. He says since its out of spec, so the magazine doesn't seat straight thus pushes the follower to the side a little bit and caused the slide stop to snag on the side of the follower instead of sitting on top of it. He also said the problem will be solved once the magazine break in, as in the paint on the side of the magazine will wear down thus makes the magazine seat in straighter and let the slide stop properly stay on top of the follower). I also dont understand why the warranty doesn't cover a out of spec magazine.

However, I swapped out the problematic follower with a good one from another magazine and walla, it works perfectly. I put the problematic follower into another magazine body and guess what, the magazine doesn't drop free. I have a total of 5 magazines but so far only swapped with one. Will test more during the weekend and then I will be sure if it is indeed the follower's problem.

Yeah, I tried Brownell and unfortunately, its on backorder.

Your follower swap is the correct diagnostic process. It's absurd that the LGS didn't do this themselves. That's quite a tale about the problem being the mag body, though.

I'd be shocked if the warranty will not cover it: S&W warranty is generally highly regarded. S&W probably didn't want to say anything definitive until they had their smith verify that there was an out-of-spec problem.
