Hello guys,

May be a stupid question, but here it is - can you transport a pistol in the rifle case (locked) ?

Can you transport both pistol and rifle in the same case ?

As I understand it, yes. Sometimes questions like this make me second guess myself.

I certainly hope so, because I have been.

To transport a pistol, you lock the pistol, put it in a case, and lock the case. Double locked.
An AR being restricted, is the same thing, lock the rifle, put it in a case and lock the case.

I almost always am shooting my AR when I go to the range, and often bring a pistol too.

Therefore, what I've been doing for the longest time, is locking my AR, and locking my pistol, putting them into the same rifle case, room permitting, and locking the case. My case is a hardshell, and I use 3 identically keyed padlock to secure it. No one at the range has ever called me on this.

It's common practice to lock multiple pistols in a single case, like those double pistol cases and what not. As long as the case is properly secured, as in you don't just have one lock on the rifle case and it can still be easily accessed, I don't see what difference it makes if there is a rifle in there with it too.

Meanwhile, some avid pistol shooters that bring several guns at a time to the range, will use a rifle case instead of several pistol cases.

IMO it's the best way to go.

Get a quality case, something in the line of a Pellican, and cut out the space for your pistol(s) in the foam; same for your rifle. If space permit you can cut out space for other accessories. One convinient package to carry.

Sure the larger case seems more expensive at first, but it comes out in the wash if you end up purchasing 3 smaller cases for your pistols later down the road.

There is no such thing as a stupid question...only stupid answers...however I agree with all the answers given so far and believe the are all correct.

the book says something like this (can't remember the exact words) 'a not easily broken into container, not see through, gun has to be locked/disabled to operate, and the container has to be locked as well. In the case you should include your ATT and Registration. That is all. You can use any container you want as you follow those rules.
Cheers.

there is no such thing as a stupid question, however, there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots in this world. (not suggesting the OP was one :) it was a good question)

No problem at all as long as the appropriate locks are in place (trigger for restricteds and lock on the main case). I shoot cowboy and often take my lever gun, shotgun and pair of pistols in one large hard double rifle case. It gets kind of heavy, but convenient to have just one container.

Bad advice. Never lock your PAL, ATT, or registration in with your firearms when transporting them.
Because, if you get stopped by the Cops on your way to the range you'll be up a creek without a paddle. You will not be able to prove that you have an ATT, PAL, or registration, because you can not open the case to get at them. If you do, you are in violation of the transport laws. You can only open that case at your house or inside an approved shooting range. Keep them somewhere you can get at them without opening any case that contains restricted firearms.

Interesting...When i took my safety course, we were told to keep att in the case, and if pulled over, give the officer permission to open the case...Not to worried as i also have a electronic copy on my cell phone, but now im second guessing myself regarding the storage of the att...

Why don't you just keep all your papers in your wallet?, That's what I do.

There isn't a cop in the entire country that is going to charge you for opening the case to remove your paperwork. As long as you are up front and tell him that it is in the case and you will need to open it to provide him/her the papers.

S.J. : seems like the logical solution, so i probably will...Im just wondering if i was given bad info in my course...Even in the practical test we had to pack up the gun as if we were at home and heading to the range, and we were told to put the att in the case...just has me wondering, if this is incorrect then what else was I taught to do wrong...

As long as you are transporting it under the restricted regulations locked gun and locked case with papers, you are OK. A NR rifle makes no difference if there is a restricted.

If you want to put your faith in the hands of some cup at the side of the road be my guest. The law says that you can not open a case containing restricted firearms while being transported from your home to the range, you must wait till you get to the range to open it. Also, a cop can not change that law, he can only enforce it.
Do as you will, I will always keep my papers in my wallet so that I can produce them if need be.

Hi
Just a thought, hand the Cop the key if you get stopped and he wants to check the firearms and let him open the case and then you would not be violating any laws. I am really sure if you told him you would not open the case he or she would probably seize them to check them out at the police station. This is judt my thoughts on the subject.
