Hi everyone!

I recently acquired a huge collection of firearms from my dad. Unfortunately, there are 5 guns that I am not able to acquire due to them being prohibited [insert anti-Prohib rant here]. He's looking to sell them and give me some of the cash, but we're having a real issue trying to find how much these guns are worth in Canada. I can easily find prices from the US, but I have a feeling that their prices are significantly lower than what they would go for up here. Are there any good places to find out how much my father's prohib stuff is worth?

Thanks!

Ok. I'll see if I can get them tonight, if not tomorrow. It's a Beretta 950, an H&R Defender, a Unique Model 17, a S&W Model 10, and a Sterling 302.

Actually..... because our prohib barrel lengths are the more desireable models down in the US as long as the gun is one of the big makers the prices down south are the same or more than what you can get for many of them up this way. In particular if they are the more mainstream big name guns.

If your dad legally owned them, why cant you get the 12.7 Prohib license? I'm pretty sure you can get grandfathered these firearms.

Already checked with the Manitoba CFO. "If they weren't made before 1946 and YOU didn't own them, you can't have them".

I really appreciate everyone's help on this!

Hi,

The 950 looks like someone dropped it on some gravel or something. Doesn't look unfired, I'd say $150 or so.

S&W Model 10 pencil barrel with some holster wear at the muzzle and aftermarket grips, don't fetch more than $200.

I sold a Sterling just like that one and got $150. You might get $200 if you have the box and spare magazine.

The Unique ... needs some more info and study. While these are generally not worth much, they were one of the Wehrmacht pistols of WWII and could indeed be pre-46. There are photos of units in the 35,000 serial range that were German.

Your H&R Defender Special is marked "Politie" (Police) and was likely issued shortly after WWII. They were made during WWII and that model, again, based on serial number, could be manufactured before 1946.

Needs more information and some research.

Neither the Unique nor the Defender are worth any kind of money, and could be the least valuable of the lot if they're the late 40s early 50s pieces that they appear. I bought a minty Unique model 17 on the EE for $85 -- really nice shape.

Before your dad sells off his last prohib, I would suggest that he buy a couple pre-46 pistols you may want (you could trade others you have for them) and gives them to you. He doesn't have to die to do that, but he does need to have at least one prohib to stay in the class long enough to hand something off to you. Then you in turn could hand that piece on to your kids, if the laws remain unchanged. It is your one and only chance to lawfully own a prohib, and sorry, the two older pieces, unless there's family history, are not really the pieces anyone would be happy to get handed down in the future.

Your dad could probably trade the 950, the Model 10 and the Sterling for a reasonable pre-war PPK, one of the ones with aluminum grips or something. Have your dad (!) post a W-T-T in the EE and ask for something pre-46, or you could always do that with other parts of the collection that you may not be as keen on.

Best of luck with this!

Huh. Never thought of this. If I'm not mistaken, that would give me my prohib, wouldn't it?

I'm definitely going to do this. My dad's moving to BC next week, so it'll take a while, but at least it'll give me my prohib (and make my collecting easier). Thanks everyone!

Actually it won't make your collecting easier according to the CFC, better get your Dad a list of the 12(7)'s you want and have him start shopping for you.

Individuals do not need to be grandfathered to acquire a prohibited handgun if:

the handgun was made before 1946, and
the handgun is currently registered in Canada, and
they are the child, grandchild, brother, sister or spouse of the lawful owner.
Individuals who acquire a prohibited handgun in these circumstances will have 12(7) printed on their firearms licence. This means that they can lawfully possess a pre-1946 handgun passed on by a direct relative, but they are not authorized to acquire other prohibited handguns.
