I just picked up a no 4 mk 1 and it has the flip sights and I learned on google that one is for 300 yards and one is 600 yards, but I can tell which is which, can someone help me? I only plan on shooting/hunting with thing between 0-150 yards with this rifle, is there a place to buy new sights? can I drill a second hole one of the hinged sight "tabs" to drop the poi a bit?

.
If you look closely, the flip type sight should have numbers on it for the yardage. If you look around a bit, especially at gun shows, you should be able to find a micrometer type sight for your rifle. They are very easy to change. Drilling the rifle for a lower hole is not a good idea, as the sight will probably interfere with the bolt operation by being too low.

If you change the front sight you can adjust the sights for 50 and 100, 100 and 200 etc, typically a hunting rifle with iron sights is shot in for one range. The 300-600 flip sight is fool proof and I set this same sight on my rifle by just changing the front sight. On top of this your not hunting with FMJ Mk.7 ammo and the military sights are calibrated for this ammo. At the lowest sight setting of 300 yards and sighted in with military Mk.7 ammo the rifle was to hit six inches high at 100 yards which is three inches higher than the adjustable sight.

If I was to shoot an animal at 100 yards would I just just aim a 5-6 inches lower? I will look up how many grains mk7 ammo was, I think I read somewhere it was 174gr but I will check.

The 300 yard sight isn't for 300 yards. It's for any range from the end of the muzzle out to 300 yards. Take it to the range with the ammo you want to use for hunting, check your point of impact on targets at 100, 200, and 300 yards and then aim at critters accordingly.

Hey Olympia!

Flip the sight towards the front of the rifle. That is the 300 yard sight.

If you go to gunshows there should be lots of people with Lee Enfield front sights. Get the tallest one you can and that will help alleviate the sighting issues.

Other than that go to the range and have some fun and figure it out exactly yourself!!!
