Yesterday I hastily purchased the gun,it came with a box of shells so i eagerly took it out to our favorite spot. I quickly noticed it shoots way off,the rear sight is loose on the reciever, how are they attached correctly ?Also the gun spits out the odd unspent shell with the empty.I assume that can end up as a dangerous accident waiting to happen, anybody know the fix for that. Dang I knew i should have bought another sks!

if it i throwing out live with the spent sounds like the mag feed lips are out of adjustment and when the bolt is open it is not retaining the one below .Need to tweek mag or find a fresh one before you start messin with the rifle

I hate to tell you this but you probably purchased a pos gun.
If it is a lower serial # gun then you might be ok, but the higher numbers are strait junk. Crapy aluminum trigger assemblies, doesn't take GI parts, out of battery firing issues, etc.
How do I know?? I used to have one..;)

Your post is difficult to read due to the lack of proper spaces etc.
Universals are considered to be junkers, as well as restricted just like any M1 Carbine. They came in several versions. Early versions are OK, but then Universal thought they could improve the design. They did not. If your's has a toggle for the bolt hold open, two return springs(requires removing the stock) and a poorly made stamped op handle, it's a late model. Not worth doing anything with.

i agree i had one before, never again lol

I have a Rock Ola, PMC and the Universal. Bought the Universal just to see what the fuss was all about. Definitely put together different.

I have an early model Universal, other then the receiver and barrel, its all USGI parts and came that way. The barrel is interesting as its 12 grooves, likely made by Marlin. It's been in the family for decades as runs as well as any USGI carbine.

It has lots of useful information about the various makes of M1 carbines over the years.

With the Universals, the general consensus is that the first generations were decent and compatible with USGI parts and accessories, but the subsequent ones were cheap-outs with poor quality and parts durability.

You are best off with the Auto Ordnance M1 in my view, because they are built almost like the originals and they at least work...

"...its all USGI parts and..." That didn't last long before they thought they could improve the design. Buddy of mine had a middle model that never gave him any greif, but it was the same.

auto ordinance is making a non restricted clone now, but it's a bit on the pricey side at 900 or so...but looks fairly decent, and avoids the restricted handicap

Would tend to disagree, I have one on my bench right now, friend of mine just bought it, brand new, $ 900 ish will not shoot, fail to feed mostly, bad mags, feed ramp wrong shape, reciever has clearance issues when feeding rounds, magwell too large and mags hang down, recoli plate loose on the reciever, he should have sent it back...

I inspected the rear site, it appears they are attached by stakeing the site to the receiver with a centre punch. These guns are nowhere the quality of a ruskie sks.I guess the universal m1 was made to fight against norinco commercial sks's. Hmmm,I think I would take the norc,at least the bayo would be handy after the gun falls apart
