308-220gr in the thick stuff?

Going on the brush buster heavy bullet theory .How would a 220gr round nose work on big game ?(in the thick stuff of northern ontario).Shots would most likely be under 100 yards ,but there might be a chance at 200plus when i get into an opening.Should i just stick to 180gr?

There is no such thing as a "brush busting" bullet.
If they come in contact with brush in flight, it's anybody's guess where they will go.

"...220gr round nose..." Too heavy for a .308. Max is a 200. OAL will be too long. In any case, like Eagleye says, it won't make any difference. If a 200 or a 220 hits anything, it'll be deflected.
It's be nice if you fixed your posts for sentences, grammar, etc. too.
 
I can't see much reason in going to a 220gr bullet in a .308 Win, especially when you can get such good performance out of a 180gr Partition. At +2600fps muzzle velocity you can use that bullet to cleanly take anything in North America at 100 yards or less. If you really like heavy, then WhyNot? had worked 200gr loads up past 2600fps with RL17. Again, imo, you could cleanly kill any animal in NA with that load.

First of all, the 220 is NOT too heavy for the 308 Winchester. Many of us have loaded it for years. It is like a 30-40 Krag on steroids, and really works on big game. It is actually a very accurate bullet in any 308 Win I have tried it in.

Secondly, know it's a typo, but "It's be nice..." is really nice grammar. ;)

You are absolutely correct. I have seen 300 gr RN fired from a 375 H&H deflect when I tried busting brush on a moose at 15 yards one time. He died, but not one of a mag full hit anywhere near the aiming point.

Never tried busting brush again,

I did some experimenting with 220 Hornadys and RL 15 in the .308, best I've got so far is (almost) 2200 fps out of an 18 1/2" barrel. I might up the charge and try again. I think a 180 or 200 gr. partition would be a better performer though.
 
Personally I'd stick to the 180 or 165 gr if you might have opportunities at 200+ yds. The tjheory that heavier / slower bullets are better able to "buck brush" is a myth.

For the bullet weights you are using I would use a .30-06 or a 300 WM....not a .308.

It's not that heavier bullets "buck brush", but, given similar construction, heavier bullets will outpenetrate lighter ones. In my neck of the woods if you wait for a picture perfect broadside shot, you may lose the opportunity altogether. This means taking any reasonable angle, except a texas heart shot.

That said, the 220 gr. RN doesn't have a very good reputation for penetration in spite of the high sectional density, and I'd pick a premium 180 gr. every time.

i was looking at penetration,heavy long bullet, moving modest velocity. i know the 220 gr is great for the 300win mag and 30/06. the reason for the 308 with the 220gr might be less meat damage, bullet opening up less because of design for higher velocity and deeper penetration.solids penetrate well on buffs with very little deformation and gets the job done.i'm obviously not an expert but was just wondering.
