Live north of Toronto~any modestly-priced clubs/ranes allow reactive targets?

Hey guys, hoping you can help. Still on the fence about crossing over into restricted and finally getting into pistol shooting. I've really enjoyed shooting .22lr semis (Ruger Mark series), and this would be the route I'd be interested in going. The idea of it being limited to short-distance paper punching, however, doesn't appeal to me. I have friends in Calgary who have all kinds of options open to them but here...about 40 minutes north of Toronto...I can't seem to find any club that allows steel targets unless you have very deep pockets.

If you're in the GTA area, belong to a club that allows for this kind of thing, please chime in. Interested in knowing the costs surrounding the start-up. No need to get my restricted license if it'll cost me much more than $500 (plus gear/courses) to go shoot paper only.

Sad to say but I don't believe there are any "moderately priced" gun clubs within the GTA. I am a member of Sharon Gun Club which probably has all that you are looking for. However the purchase of a share at approx $3000.00 is a prerequisite of membership & then an annual fee of about $450.00. If you can handle the investment in a share it would be worth it.

Well, that's the club I had in mind when I mentioned looking for something affordable. Even when I was considering membership there, I shot as a guest of one of the members/managers who's role seemed to be showing people around. To say I got the cold shoulder would be an understatement. A couple of the guys I met on the range were first-class though, so I left there with very mixed feelings about the place. Too bad too, probably 15 minutes from my house. Don't have that kind of $ to make a move anyway right now.

If you don't mind the drive to Cobourg (about 70 minutes east of Toronto give or take) the Northumberland Pistol and Revolver Club may be what you're looking for. Outdoor range ... I was a member years ago and moved west. Might be something to check out ...

One question on the side for Rob. After joining Sharon (buying a share, paying dues, etc) what is involved to become a good standing member? It looks like there is so many steps as a probationary member to become a full member after sinking so much money into it. Please let me know. And as for any clubs that allow you to shoot steel, I have no clue but maybe Silverdale's? Not 100% as I am not a member.
 
Glockguy - I'm going through the probationary process at Sharon right now. So far it has involved a quick basic safety questionnaire, and 5 observations of me shooting (safety oriented - can be observed my any member). This is followed by some volunteer time to help maintain the range.

Qualification for various ranges at Sharon vary (e.g. Black Badge for some, course and accuracy observation for 200m and 300m range).

My experience with the members has been in general very positive so far. Even my 14 yr old likes meeting people there, and he is a little shy.
 
"...club that allows steel targets..." Usually club property and only used by IPSC etc. Club equipment like that is expensive and there are a lot of rectal orifi out there who think nothing of using rifle calibres on pistol targets and/or CF rifles on RF targets.
"...about 40 minutes north of Toronto..." Up the 400? Try Barrie. Mind you, no club in the TO area is going to be cheap.

Thanks Pr589. I saw on the site you have to do observation shoots 5 times with a rifle or shotgun. Do you know what I would do if I am only interested in the pistol side of things? Do you still have to do the rifle/shotgun observation shoots because I don't own one (yet). If you don't know I understand but anyones help would be appreciated!
 
Burlington has a silhouette night where they set up steel targets for you to shoot at..

The pistol side was a MAJOR pain for me. It took the one of the guys in charge there 7 weeks 2 lies (his lies) and a CSSA call to get him to do the safety course... That is required to start your pistol probation . Could have possibly been the biggest disappointment I've had in shooting sports so far.. 4k deep into the club 5k deep into pistols 0 rounds fired after 7 weeks (9 weeks by the time the ATT came)

Ouch! That sounds rough. Like I said, pistol is all I have right now and I don't want to go through all that hassle to shoot them there. Besides, I am happy at my club anyway! I guess I will save my money for another day. Thanks for the input skip1600! :)
