New to milsurp, what to buy?

Looking at getting a milsurp, love the history behind them, What would you guys recommend for a good first bolt action rifle, preferably easy to find ammo without reloading and parts availability. Decent accuracy is a must.

Would love to get a K98 or 1903, any other mauser or converted caliber.

No I'm not looking for an SKS :(

Any other rifles aside from enfield, Mosin, etc?

And last, what to look for at gun show's preferably under 500$.

Just get two of everything! There are some decent South American mausers kicking around, K31's, Swedish mausers. Can't go wrong with any of them for the price. Mosin Nagants are supposedly coming back this summer at some point too.
 
I am in the same boat,I have been kicking around the Enfield MK4 the MK5 ,P14 or P17 and the swedes from tradex but have not pulled the trigger on anything yet, I think I came pretty close to a P14. My deal is I want good adjustable apperature sights.

I'm still looking as well... cheap ammo is a must and highly accurate low recoil
 
Buy a Ross mkIII, they will out shoot damn near any other milsurp. Also you can't go wrong with the already mentioned K31,K11 and any Swedish Mauser.

Every Canadian should own some form of lee enfield so maybe that should be what you're after.

I must say though a mosin nagant is still the best bang for the buck if you're wanting a big bolt action milsurp IMHO. I just bought my first mosin a Finish m91 and even with an 1 1/2" counter bore it's a superb shooter. My neighbor has a typical $200 mosin m91/38 and it's also a great shooter.

If you want a semi auto go buy an Sks and a case of ammo. I have an SKS and although it's not even close to my favorite gun it still has a permanent place in my safe. The 7.62x39 cartridge is a nice intermediate round and won't beat the crap out of you like some of the big caliber bolt guns will.

Really it will start with your "first milsurp" and soon it will be "your next milsurp" and so on. These guns are addictive and I've yet to meet a person that stops at just one!

That was almost 50 rifles ago.

My friend has a sporter enfield that he reloads, Have never shot it though. A mosin sounds good and for the price of ammo it can't be beat. I would love to get a hold of a ross or a 1903 but that's quite an investment for a "first milsurp".
An 8mm mauser sounds nice but whats the cost of 8mm ammo. I assume you would have to reload for it to be cost effective?

Another question is are there any good gun shows around Ottawa, Toronto? The only one that I know of is the one in Carp around september. I used to love the easter weekend gun show at the saddledome when I lived in Calgary. Sibbald flats would always be packed that weekend ;)

I can't help you with gun shows in southern Ontario.

But I will say my first milsurp rifle was a 1916 no1 MKIII sporter that I got for $100 and it came with 90 pieces of brass and around 40 rounds of ammo. I must say that it made me go milsurp crazy.

If you want a full length 8 mm Mauser find a Turkish Mauser in good shape, they can be had for under $300 usually. But seriously my pick for a bolt gun would be a mosin. I shied away from them for awhile but now that I have one I must say that they are great shooters and in my opinion a blast to shoot.

Didn't sleep much last night, that post was XL coffee number 6 of the day!! And done while doing math while building an HVAC system in a big custom house!!

My brain is scattered and hyperactive..............what was I saying........oh well you get the point!:):):):)
 
As I have said many times here, owning a Long Branch No.4 should be a prerequisite for being able to vote in this country. Some flavour of Mauser is also pretty much essential; I'm a 98 fan but any of the others are also great rifles. K31s are simply awesome rifles; chocolate and watches are just sidelines for the Swiss. Mosin Nagants are epic fusions of clubs, spears, and rifles and are quite simply indestructible. Garands? BOOMBOOMBOOMBOOMBOOMBOOMBOOMBOOMping! Of course, SKSes are pretty much a must-have rifle too. And I'm somehow beginning to think I'm not helping...
