Most of us go beyond paper and cans... Some of us take it to the next level. The joy of rim fire is that you can go out and blast off 500 rounds without breaking the bank and you can do it without magazine capacity restrictions. I can only poke so many holes in paper before I go looking for more interesting things to shoot at. So go ahead and post pics of your targets, ideas for targets and the damage. Make shift or your custom built creations, and feel free to post a pic of what you shot it with. I am in the process of building a few different variations and will post them here as they are finished and tested.

Picked off my old motorcycle helmet yesterday with a .58 cal. musket. Wouldn't want to have been wearing it but those things are tough. Wish I could post photo's but alas I can't. Pick up a cheapo at a garage sale and find out, it's kinda fun.
I have a couple I've made, since paper, and cans gets boring so quick.
First is a kids skating bar with chain links welded to it, It has stood up to a lot more and a lot longer than I thought it would!
Time for new plates though as a friend shot them with SKS and slugs.
Next is just two angle irons, I like to hammer in to the ground and then hook the bigger plate on with chains through the chain links I welded to the angles.
Haven't really gotten to give this one a proper testing yet. With the bigger plate it will be more suitable for 2-300 yard plinking when the weather is cooperative.
Also the wooden bases in the back ground are "modular" in that the base and the uprights with board attached for targets.

I like the angle iron idea, it would be great for packing out to long range spots. I could see it pulling the tops of the angle iron inward as the gong gets hammered, maybe a removeable crossbrace across the top if it becomes an issue?

It really is great ant compact as i sold my truck and was forced to make something that fits in the car as the skating bar is too dented up to collapse anymore.
And, as far as them leaning inward after a few shots, just hammer them down in a "V" shape. but if that still wont work then yes a top brace with some wing nuts or something will be the way to go.
Edit: As far as packing it, the 1/8th inch angles together weigh less than the 1/4 inch plate. So they are alright (maybe even walking sticks?) and just clip the carribeaners (spelling?) on your pack and heck, you'd barely notice it among all that ammo and gear in the pack! haha

The right plate on the skating bar is 1/4 inch. .223 and 7.62x39 both punch right through. A 3" 1 1/4 ounce rifled slug bent it pretty good. Left plate is 1/2 inch. 7.62 and .223 did not fully pierce, but left one heck of a crater, .223 was 55 grain American eagle FMJ, and 7.62 was just cheap surplus FMJ! (Corrosive). I like 1/4 inch plates for rimfire as it still swings and rings them but NO damage is done besides missing paint!

The "smaller" 1/3 inch plate was flipped around after it was cratered, (the back used to be the front). I dont like shooting cratered plates as the chance of ricochet's increases.

hey man, don't worry about it! Great pics. Thanks for the extra info. I'm also shooting at a 4 inch round piece of AR500. I shoot 308 150 grn fmj. Doesn't even leave a mark!

been thinking about making myself something along these lines.
how do the chains hold up? is there a better option?
do you need a special steel? 5.56 and 8mm mauser are my concerns.

This is my auto-reset target , these things work great and you never have to go stand the cans back up with this. I also have a bunch of different hanging steel plates.
I have the same one! Bought it at Lebaron nice little target i use it for my 22 and my 22 air rifle. But the air rifle doesnt have enough oomph to move the steel targets.
