Okay so I have an issue with my norinco 1911. I more or less have the problem figured out. But until its fixed the gun is useless. Should I take this opportunity to rebuild it with a new barrel? Or slide it in the back of the safe and buy something new?

I've always wanted to build a 1911 but the parts availability in Canada sucks.
The wife said it might be easier to just buy a new one and I hate passing up on a new gun when the wife suggests it!

If I do buy new, any suggestions( NOT norinco)?
If I rebuild, any one have leads on parts sources other than Brownells?

So slide that Norinco to the back of the safe, do as your wife suggests and rebuild the Norinco later. That's gunnutz.

Maybe one of the few times youll actually WANT to listen to the wife. Plus, if you keep your eyes open you may find a cheap take off barrel somewhere and get the ol' norc up and running again and have BOTH... one beater and one sweeter.

Do both, rebuild the Norc as you can or make it a winter project. If you want absolutely everything 1911, got to Fusion Firearms, they ship here no problem

Not everyone has money for 71 year old colt. Which is why norincos are popular. When I bought it 2 years ago, $360 bucks took months to save up. Thanks for the helpful advice.
Funny my 71 yr old Colt works just as good as when it left the factory in 1942
I could have sworn I read on the internet that Norinco 1911's were great guns ?

Any suggestions on a 1911 for $1000 ish and under?

Well if you have $1000 to spend there was a WW2 1911a1 in the EE several days ago for $800

Get a new Norc barrel from Armco - along with every single other part from a Norc (or STI). Also has a Colt barrel in right now. If it's just the barrel - Misanthropist is doing a Norc based build, he might sell you his barrel.

so it shoots 6 inch groups at 25 yards and wont feed anything but hardball? Swell! USGI 1911 are for collecting, not serious shooting. And if they shoot much better then that, they've been worked on, and not shot much, as USGI slides are un hardened as a war expedient to production. They guys looking for a shooter...not a collection piece. As far as new colts go, i steer folk in the store away from them, as of the 4 sold in the last 6 months, 3 have came back with mechanical failure...they do look pretty though.

If you can swing a little more than the G note the S&W base models at around $1100 sure are nicely finished and the fit seems to be very high quality. My ONLY issue with this option is the non standard external extractor. But otherwise they seem like a great way to go.

To keep things down to under a G note with taxes included I'd echo the idea of a Ruger or Remington and add the Spartan. I'm not sure about the previous poster's downer over the Spartan but the two I've handled and shot were both excellent guns for under a grand.

No issues with my SR1911 other than the grip screws needing some blue locktite. It's a nice piece.

I've only shot maybe 500 rounds, since it sows a fine garden of brass over a 90 degree arc. Chasing 9mm is less hassle. ;)

I wouldn't mind a sub g-note 1911 in 9mm. Seem limited to Norc or SAM pretty much. Pondering a BHP, though I've never shot one.

Lend me your Colt for six months, I'll send the pieces back after 5,000 rounds, and go back to shooting my Norc Compact which already has over 5,000 rounds through it, without a single failure
