What reliable fun .22 would you recommend for under $350?

I 10/22 personally isn't the way to go. If you talk to anyone whos owned one, they always end up putting over $500-$1000 in upgrades on the gun.So $350 for your budget isn't an option.
So many people get sucked in by all the 10/22 hype.
I have the savage and it is a great bolt gun.
Guess it depends on if you want a semi auto or not and what you will be using it for.

That's a crock. Talk to me, I own 2 and have had 3 others. I have also owned almost every other .22LR semi in the main stream. The 10/22 is the only one I have NEVER had jamming problems with. I have owned Remington, Savage, Cooey, etc... THEY ALL JAM with few exceptions of some that were reliable only with "special" ammo. As far as paying for upgrades, people spend money on upgrades for 10/22's because they can. The fact is that there are many after-market parts available for the 10/22 and there isn't for your Savage. They don't upgrade because they have to, they do it because they want to and it is a gun worthy of upgrading...

My brother has never had a problem feeding with his savage.

I have a Savage Mark II. Great bolt action. I considered selling it and buying a CZ455 American, but I've grown to like the Savage. It shoots where I aim it, and has yet to have any issues at all... I cant justify the CZ at the moment, so I'll stick with the Savage, and pass it off to my wife when I can afford the 455.

It shoots everything I've fed it with no problems at all.

Savage bolt action rifles are a completely different animal from the semi's. Savage makes a top shelf bolt action. I still prefer my CZ but that's just my personal preference. There is no dis'ing Savage bolt guns

With your budget...

Accuracy, simple to clean, easy to scope, good trigger~Savage Mark II bolt action. You should even have some left over $ for some spare mags.

Pretty accurate, very reliable, not-too-bad-to-clean, so-so trigger~Marlin 795. You should have enough spare $ to get several spare mags, cheap scope rings, and an entry-level 3-9x scope.

"Top shelf" might be just a tad exaggerated. The last one I bought had the rear base screws tapped crooked so the base was canted when mounted. A shim and Millett Angle Loc rings were needed to get enough adjustment from the scope. I emailed three Canadian Savage service centers, no response.
They're inexpensive and crude with poor fit and finish, albeit accurate.

wow ^ this is turning in to a anti Savage thread I own a Savage Mk II a Ruger SR-22 (10/22) and a Henry Golden boy and love em all this sounds to me like a tuff call that I couldent make myself

If a 10/22 shot so great out of the box, why would anyone upgrade it.
Yes they can because it's the Honda civic of 22s. However like a civic it's a very low end gun to begin with, only when you upgrade it does it really shine.
Anyone who says they haven't spend almost the cost of the gun in upgrades or more, isn't being honest with you!!!!!!!!
Ask anyone who has a savage and CZ if they have spent the cost or the gun or more on upgrades for there gun. The truth is they don't have to because they shoot great out of the box.

Looking for fun, get pps-50 from canadaammo combo deal for $499 includes 5000 rounds, you need to buy ammo anyways. Good deal

Is that the same reason why people spend what they paid for their AR's on upgrades?

The only upgrade I did to my 10/22 is a Timney trigger & added a Nikon Prostaff scope plus some 25 round magazines. I bet you didn't put a 25 round magazine on one of those other semi-auto .22's. The reason is that NONE of them have managed to make one that works.

The reason no one upgrades a Savage is that there's not much out there for upgrades. Maybe a Boyds laminate stock? That's about it.
For 10/22's on the other hand, there are endless aftermarket add ons, and yes, they generally get better the more money you spend on them, like most things. In stock form they're just a fun plinker, but not a target gun by any means.

Why do the Savage owners always get so worked up? You seem to think your $300 gun is equal to a Cooper. It's not, get over it. It's worth exactly what you paid for it.

Actually I have the largest Mag that is made. 275 round drum mag for my Su-22. However I haven't commented on it because it's outside the OP budget.
Is there a bolt action that has a mag larger then ten rounds?
As for semi auto, you're blowing smoke if you think a 10/22 stock will group the same as a stock savage or CZ.

BTW, how much was your Timney trigger and if a stock 10/22 is so great, why would you need it? I'm tired of ruger owners not being honest with newbies

Same thing with any other brand lover. I loled at your comment though. Sometimes what they cost is pushing it. I wonder how many beer can tabs are used to make one of those rifles cou:

There was a 25 round one for the cz bolt actions.

The trigger was $165. I didn't like the stock trigger but I haven't liked any other semi-auto stock trigger either. I replaced the trigger on my Savage bolt action .308 & my Remington 700 5R. I have replaced the stock on my XCR-L & for that matter, I also replaced the shocks on my Porsche 911. What's your point??? I buy good stuff and make it better...because I can, not because it wasn't good to start with. If you can't afford a 10/22, so be it. I do agree that the Savage & Remington groups "marginally" better than the 10/22 out of the box. The FACT is that the 10/22 action/magazine design is dramatically more reliable and a gun that repeatedly shoots 1.5 MOA is better than one that shoot 1.2 MOA and then jams. The reason why so many companies sell after market upgrades for the 10/22 is because a) they are very popular & b) because they are a very reliable design that lends itself to reliable upgrades.
