So, i've heard they're deadly-nasty-baby-narwhal-killing death machines in the media.

I've heard they can't hit the broad side of a barn from point blank range. (Mainly the older ones)

I've also heard the .223 round is incredibly whimpy and if you fire it at a baby narwhal you'll only tickle it a little before it swims smilingly along it's merry way.

I have no experience with .223's or Mini-14s so i figured i'd ask you fellows who do what they're like. I've been thinking about getting one lately. If Ruger ever sends more to Canada...

**Disclaimer** No baby narwhals were hurt in the making of this post. I also never intend to hurt or tickle one with any Mini-14 i may buy even though Otokiak told me they taste good and are also fun to tickle.

Not at all... some of the media are even saying that the .223 bullet is a high caliber bullet, capable of tearing through the flesh of school narwhal's, with the bullet continuing through the brick and steel laden narwhal built walls, just before they penetrate through the door and engine block of the short narwhal bus on the other side of the wall.

the mini 14 in it's original guise, was not noted for good accuracy, 4" groups at 100 yards being the norm. What it did have going for it was that it was light, handy and reliable. A lot of farmers used them as trunk guns /truck guns. When ruger (finally) started making their own barrels things got better accuracy wise.

The 223 round is capable of what it was designed to do ie military round for 400 m max engagements with the ideal range being less then 200 m. With a bullet heavier then 55g, it's less effective, thought more accurate at longer ranges. It IS an excellent coyote and ground hog round...
 
I had a newer Mini14 Target with the hogue stock. Fun little gun. Fairly accurate at 100yards (1 1/2-2" using American Eagle 55gr Tactical). But depending on use or it u reload. It just eats brass, dings it and smashes the mouths. I sold it and bought a browning X-Bolt in .223 for long range gopher shots. (Shooting 1/2" groups at 100yards with handloads)
 
My 581 series shoots around 1 1/2" at 100 with AE or Win ammo. I just picked up another (582) but haven't shot it yet.

I just love how compact and handy these little rifles are. The triggers surprisingly, are not as objectionable as I had anticipated. Could use a little smoothing, but not bad.

Will try to remember to take some pics the next time I'm out with them. My GF can sure shoot the hell out of a coffee can with the Mini-14 though... (perhaps I'll HAVE to remember some pics of that LOL.)
 
one of my favorite plinkers, my 582 shoots about 4" at 100yards on the first few shots, after that all bets are off, love it on the 50 yard range with standing (not thrown, wish I could hit it thrown lol) clay pidgons and iron sights, will never sell it
 
K so the thread's been moved? I put it in General seeing as how there are lots of different types of Mini-14s. Target, Tactical, Regular, S/S etc. I was hoping that by it being in General i would get lots of responses from guys who own different types but i guess it's stuck here now. Le sigh.

Anyway, thanks guys for all the responses so far. I really appreciate all the info you guys post. :cheers:
