Hi guys,

I have an 1892 that I am trying to get a little more info on. 300000 serial number. From what i found it was made in 1907. I think it carbine lenght. I havent seen a short magazine tube. Wood looks good. No bluing left, but no rust. Bore looks pretty good. Here are some pics.

Looks like an 1892 saddle ring carbine with button magazine. It has a rifle butt stock instead of a carbine butt. Probably a replacement but it is possible it was ordered that way. The saddle ring is missing and the rear sight has been replaced. It might be worth further investigation to find out if the butt is original to the rifle. Not likely but possible. If someone ordered it with a half mag, they may have ordered it with a rifle butt.

Thanks for the quick reply mike. That's where I seem to be having trouble. Finding a website or person to get in touch with to find out if it is stock or has replacement parts. I knew the sights were replacement. The person who owned the gun has passed away so can't get info that way. May be interested in selling but want to get a litle more info first.

Winchester Museum has all the original factory production dockets on these rifles. They will provide a letter with particulars, for a fee.

Not really a whole lot of SRCs made with half-length magazines. Worth checking out.

Nice piece!

Winchester Museum was given to, and now is housed at, the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, but it is still the Winchester Museum.

You don't want Bill Cody answering letters about Winchesters, do you?

He was a Smith & Wesson/Sharps' man himself!

Letter will get to the right desk faster if addressed to Winchester Historian.

Yes, I AM a pedantic SOB! ;-)

Just so you know I was offering a service for a CGN member "Free" just trying to help out. If not go ahead and contact them yourself , you will find it's not free. Smellie you will notice no mention of Winchester Museum in any of the contact information. Jesi not only does records for Winchester but Marlin and LC Smith shot guns

Hello,

If you will post the full serial number I can tell you the exact day the rifle was serialized. It is definitely
earlier than 1907.

Actually, there is a good percentage of saddle ring carbines manufactured with half magazines. The very
uncommon ones are with 2/3 and 3/4 magazines. I am working on a research survey of the 1892's to help
determine configuration variations for the entire production run of the Model 1892's.

The unique thing about your rifle is the fact that the butt stock is a rifle crescent butt instead of a standard
carbine butt.

Additionally the W/P proof stamp on the barrel is located in front of rear sight instead of immediately
forward of the caliber stamp. Could you please post a photo of the barrel address stamp. It is most likely the style
with 2 lines of print of equal length and located on the top of the barrel.

The condition is lower than what most serious condition hound collectors are looking for. The rear sight is not original
and obviously the saddle ring is missing. The screw eye in the stock is not in the correct position and thus is not original.
Is there a hole in the bottom of the barrel band. It would probably be valued at a maximum of $1000.

Looking forward to helping further
Michael

"...you will notice..." The really sad part is that despite its age, a Win '92 is neither BP nor an antique. Neat rifles just the same.
"...manufactured with half magazines..." Typical of hunting rifle rather than the myth of Winchesters winning the American West.
