Looking for 14.5"/14" barrel AR-15

Only the lower receiver is controlled. Just the body, not the parts within or on it.

The upper, barrel and all the misc parts and pieces are not controlled. There is no requirement to have a license to buy or own any of the parts for an AR other than the lower receiver.

You could have 8 different upper receivers and one lower. There is a requirement that you call the CFC to change the registration particulars if you change anything such as calibre or barrel length. This must be done with-in 30 days of making the changes. This also applies if you own a lower that is just registered as a frame receiver. You must inform the CFC within 30 days if you mate an upper and make it possible to discharge ammo.

The within 30 days is the sticky bit...... Technically if you transport the upper separated from the lower receiver you will never have a problem. If you transport the rifle assembled with a different upper than it is registered with you could have some questions to answer if you run afoul of some ambitious LEO.....

IMHO, you would defiantly benefit from a long slow read of the FA and the Regs....... If nothing else it will open your eyes...

The 30 days thing is weird. How can CFC or LEO try to prove their point that the upper and lower has been mated for more than 30 days? They have to be physically be with the rifles in person for at least 30 days.

If the upper was brand spanking new then you would be correct.

If the upper was well used I would expect that you would be explaining it to a judge......

I have 2 lowers that are mated to their uppers exclusively. I have them registered as x calibre and y barrel length.

The 4 lowers that I swap out from upper to upper or that have no dedicated upper I have registered as frame/receiver, multi-calibre.

I have never been asked for my papers whilst hunting, shooting or transporting. But I still keep my uppers off of my frame/receiver lowers while in transport or storage.....

But then I also have a copy of the RCMP storage and transport guidelines in my range bag as well as affixed to the wall in my "G-room" as well as taped to the surface of each of the various cabinets and cupboards with-in. I also have a copy of the act and regs in my storage room. It is hung from a nail on the wall beside the door.

I go out if my way to ensure I don't have a problem, but if I need to I can prove that I am following the letter of the law before I get arrested.

But then I have never had a problem either.....

now that 30 days rule....is it 30 consecutive days, or total of 30 days who have they mated? If it has to be 30 consecutive days, then technically you can shoot for 5 days every 1 month, and separate them after ward and do it again the next month. The upper of course will look well used.

Is it hard to register the lower with the new upper? What if I want to detach the new upper and put back the original upper and register? How many back and forth registration you are allowed to have?

The law says 30 days. It doesn't elaborate, so neither will I.

However I do not think that your argument is flawed.

I do not believe that a judge would agree with you. I am pretty sure that most crown prosecutors won't agree.....

It is very easy to change the details on your certs. Call in and once you have someone on the phone it take 2-5 min.

Change back and forth as many times as you like, no charge from the CFC for the service...... For now at least.....

To be honest it is by far the easiest to take the upper off the lower. It's faster to do than dialing 1-800-731-4000....

I know but referring back to your argument that what if the upper looks well used? You suggested to call and to change the description because taking it off and on is not enough. But now you said it is faster to just take it off the lower and faster then calling them. I am confused.

Have you read the firearms act yet? The answer to that question and many more are contained within. This is your hobby. Familiarize yourself with the laws governing it. At this point, there is no excuse for not having read the firearms act, other than laziness.

You got me. Lazy is my reason. I will eventually, but right now I need to know the direct answer to the question to make a purchase decision.

Why should I or anyone else take the time to answer your question when you apparently have no interest in learning our gun laws for yourself? I understand that Canadian gun laws can be confusing, and I do my best to help other people out with understanding them, providing they put some effort in too! It'll take less than an hour to read the act, and I'm not going to spoon feed someone answers because they can't be bothered to read a few hundred lines of text.

It's a forum. I will read it if I have time for it. Right now due to many things in my personal life plus the availability of the item, I asked people who already know the answer. Not everyone the time like you. If you don't want to answer it, it is fine by me. Someone else is kindly enough to help and I will do the same thing if they ask.

Just like exercise, you don't find time for it, you make time for it. Someone simply answering does not encourage you to do the reading and learn our laws for yourself. As someone with several years of experience in the industry, I have a decent grasp on our gun laws, and do enjoy helping people understand them. Hence my dilemma. I'd love to answer, but if I do, you're just going to have another question in a day or two, and even if that is answered by me or someone else, you won't have a greater understanding or our gun laws.
