A few questions about the Tavor

I bought a Tavor the other day. I just had a few questions. Is it normal that I cant insert a loaded mag on a closed chamber? I run it in there pretty hard, but it just wont go. It dose it with the GI and the P-mag.
I'm also curious about what loads work best. It's a 1:7 twist, am I correct in assuming lighter weight bullets work best?
And I'm a little worried about my bolt catch, the rifle is pretty dam solid. But the bolt hold open just seems flimsy. There seems to be a lot of play, and is it plastic? I read that the P-mag can actually damage the bolt hold open if the mag isnt modified.

Anyway, I'm loving the rifle. It's hands down my favorite gun.

 
The 1:7 twist is better suited towards heavier bullets. The bolt catch, IMO, is the weakest part of the rifle. I have just over 2000 rounds through mine and it may have to be replaced soon. The play in the bolt catch is normal, nothing to be worried about. As for PMAGs, they won't harm the tavor at all. The PMAG was designed with a rearward bolt catch in mind since it was designed for the ACR/Masada. The Tavor has a similar bolt catch design and doesn't hang up on the follower like the SCAR does. I hope this helps.

Thanks for replying. So having a 1:7 twist, should I shoot heavier bullets, or dose it just give me the ability to shoot heavier bullets? I guess what I'm asking is, is there a certin bullet weight that it likes best?
And do you know of a upgraded bolt catch? Perhaps a steel or aluminum one?

Oh, and is it normal that I cant insert a loaded mag on a closed bolt?

The only ammo my tar21 hates is American eagle. USA surplus and com lock surplus running hot and long.

You're right about the closed bolt thing. Pinned magazines suck that way.

The bolt of a Tavor is not the bolt of an AR-15. It's lower, and expects that the rounds inside the magazine can be slightly compressed when loaded.

I don't know this for a fact, but I'd bet half my bank account that the IDF loads their mags to 25 rounds.

In Canada though we're stuck with pins, so a 5 round mag at capctiy can have similar compression to a 30 round mag at capacity.

If its a problem: load with your bolt the rear and then release?

Ahh, I see. Do you have the same issue with the LAR-15 mag when loaded to capacity?

I use LAR mags almost exclusively and I just give them a real good slap to seat them. Don't be afraid to be rough with your rifle! She's made to be soldier proof. :p

Hundreds of rounds down range with multiple Tavors and I've never had any issues with the factory mag, LAR mags or any 5/30 steel AR mag. I will say I have never tried Pmags in my Tavor or any rifle for that matter, and never will. Love Magpul cool aid but Pmags not do much.
 
I find my LAR 15s are tight but not unbearable. Some of my USGI mags are just a pain in the ass though.

I seem to recall someone (blaxsun?) filing down parts of their LAR-15 follower to give it some extra compression

I have 1:7 that won't shoot certain heavier ball ammo worth a damn, but they like the under powered 55gr stuff. The quality of the barrel, the chambering.....the sprinkle of the unicorn's droppings.....

Don't worry about the twist rate too much. Just buy the off the shelf ammo at the best price and shoot it.

From what I recall, it's something like 3-5mm that needs to be filed down on the posts when you replace the baseplate with something like a Magpul Ranger or L-plate. Otherwise you won't get 10 rounds in, let alone 10 on a closed bolt. Credit goes to the original individual that pointed this out a while back.

I'm told the PMAGs (including latest generation) load on a closed bolt with 30 rounds.
 
My tavor can not accept a fully loaded mag on a closed bolt. I have been loading 4 rounds in 5 rounders. 8 in the LAR mags. 14 in the *********** 5 round 50 Cal mags, and they all function fine.
