New CanadaAmmo Norinco 1911, also Norc ammo. Half way through a magazine I got hot powder flakes all over my forearms. Didn't notice anything off in the sound of the shot, etc. Fired a few more shots. When I ejected the empty magazine, this case fell out of the magwell with it. I just don't get why it's blown out on one edge and caved in on the other. Or how it found space inside to bounce around while I fired three or four more shots. Gun seemed to work fine. Enlighten me? This is the first time I've taken my .45 1911 out.

That's not a case rupture, all that damage was done on extraction/ejection. I was just talking to a guy today who showed me some brass that looked identical to this and it was also fired out of a Norc 1911. My Jericho 941 .45 did this to the brass for the first 500rds or so.

idk where it found the space to stay in the gun instead of being ejected out but the round probably got smashed into the mouth of the chamber when it didnt fully eject and the next round was being chambered since it is new you may have just not noticed it running differently

This:
not enough extractor tension

With no rounds in the magazine, the spent case isn't being held up, so it slips down out of the grip of the extractor and doesn't extract. Sometimes, the spent case will drop down, but the extractor will pull it backwards through the magazine lips, which really ties thing up and is hard on magazines.

The bench test for extractor tension is to take the slide disassembled from the gun and slide a round up under the extractor. It should be able to hold it in place as you tip the slide around. Next comes the live fire test. Spent cases should consistently eject out the ejection port with no magazine installed.

It's the crappy norinco ammo, it doesn't work as well as blazer 45acp or any other NA made ammo. What happens with the norinco ammo in my experience with it, is that at time of fire, it doesn't have enough bang in it to send the slide all the way back some times in some shots, causing the empty shell to bang brass around the ejection port, partially being pushed forward. I could be wrong but, this is what I have Noticed numerous times, with ammo fail. When I use blazer or American 45acp, no problems. U get what you pay for.

I'm going to be blunt, you are wrong. It's has nothing to do with the Norc ammo, Norc .45 acp is some of the most reliable ammo I've fired, it's also the dirtiest and the hottest non +P ammo I've shot.

Got it. Thanks, I guess I just associated the burning powder flakes with this round because of the damage to the case - Makes more sense that they'd be unrelated and this was the last round in the magazine. Tjhaile's explanation is great.

A lot of the brass I picked up had the rim bent out of round, but this was the only one that was clearly smashed by something.

And yeah, this is some dirty ammo. Not as bad as the Wolf .38 I've got, but still...

I have used this ammo in my JR-45 acp as well, and it's a poor performer. Guess your batch worked well for you that's good, maybe I'll buy another 1000 rounds and try again this weekend.

Common on new Norcs. Empty case got rammed into the slide opening.

^ this is the correct answer. My norc does it when the extractor channel get bunged up with powder residue. There isn't enough room for the extractor or move and let go of he case as it comes up on the ejector. The slide slams closed and its almost stove pipes but the case is pinched in the ejection port and ejects. I have never had a stoppage, but I do pick up some cases exactly like the OP posted when it needs cleaning.

I'll second this. I know some people who swear by the stuff and I've fired it out of some friends 1911's and it never caused me any problems either.

Thanks Ganderite, I'll check that out.

Heh, well it happened in the first 100 rounds and the gun was already pretty filthy by then, so I'll have to try some cleaner ammo at some point. Other cases I picked up did have a flattened edge, but none were as badly mangled as that one.
