Decided to change things up a little this year and have forsaken the annual October Ontario moose hunt.

Had a generous offer from a friend to join him at his family's traditional October goose hunting extravaganza, in Yorkton Saskatchewan! One complete week of field hunting for Canada's without having to drive for hours to get there, awesome!

Really looking forward to travelling to Saskatchewan, it'll be my first out-of-Province hunting trip so I'm naturally stoked.

Anybody in the area that can suggest any other small-game hunting opportunities, at that time of the year, around Yorkton?

Enjoy ... some of the best waterfowling in the country.

The locals can surely put you on to a duck shoot or two as well, and you
don't have to travel too far to get into Huns & Sharptails.

Ask ahead of time about licenses, loads and appropriate gear. Not unusual
in Saskatchewan in October to be either shirt sleeves or snow & cold !
While the rivers & any big water is open, I've seen the potholes frozen
over first week of October ... only to re-open a few days later. Vividly
recall a nice hunt in warmish conditions one Monday afternoon in early
October to wake up to snow and -5 ! Be prepared !

Thank you for the pointers dear Sir, appreciate them! Layered clothing, CHECK!

Had the pleasure of chasing a good number of Sharptail coveys, while moose hunting in Red Lake Ontario, about six years ago.
Lots of Sharpies that year in the clearcuts, beautiful birds and a truly challenging game animal compared to hunting spruce grouse all the time...

You should be able to scare up a few sharpies and huns in the afternoons. Just walk the fencelines and draws. Ducks aplenty. Bring you camera too. There has been some great moose in that area. Like 55"+ bulls. Mind you some of the guys will exagerate as i doubt there are many bulls wider than a grid road! I think they may have been using their Pilsner binoculars...... You know what, you might as well bring some slugs and buckshot to fling at coyotes too. Haha, have a fun time. You should at least be able to heat up your shotgun barrel.

I grew up 40km from Yorkton, and am in the city whenever I visit my parents. The waterfowl hunting is good, but not as great as some other areas of the province. There are also a few ruffed grouse, sharptails, and Hungarian partridge in the area, but the populations have dropped considerably over the years.

Don't go there with the intentions of killing yotes, open to residents only, good way to get into crap! Enjoy your watefowling! I certainly do!

Sounds good, thanks for the info! Are there any types of rabbits than can be hunted in the area?

Roger that! I looked up the SK hunting regs online and did notice that myself. No worries on my part, plenty of coyotes in Ontario to hunt if I'm up to it...

Bring clothing for a range of temperatures, layering like mentioned is key. Weather can plummet in an instant and everything is buried with snow. Packing a white painters overalls is a good just in case item!

Thats right! Sorry about the coyote suggestion! Im pretty embarassed as I dont usually miss that kind of thing. Glad others caught my slip up to remind me to be a bit more careful. Thanks guys.

I thought you traded someone a goose hunt in exchange for a goose hunt and all I could picture was that scene from Dances With Wolves...

Good. Trade.
