Hey, I have a 22lr for plinking and have only shot at a buddy's farm. When I shoot in Alberta I find a local gravel pit and go on a weekend. Does anyone know of a small pit or have experience/input?

You would have to goto the mnr crown land atlas,
And find crown land in an area where discharge bylaws
Allow discharge for target shooting or better yet
No discharge bylaw, you would most likely have to drive to
At least bracebridge or huntsville before you find
Suitable land.

Is there any crown land ppl have been to that is close to a main road, nice and open, and has a good backstop

"...plink near Barrie..." The MNR has decided that the only reason to have a firearm in the bush is for hunting. It considers plinking to be the same as hunting. Nearly all of Southern Ontario is owned by somebody, usually people from TO, and most is posted. That requires written permission from said land owner to be there. Any gravel pit will be posted, period.
The OFAH has somehow gotten control of the Simcoe County Forest, not far from you, so you must be a member to shoot there. Other Crown Land is infested with assorted riff-raff like picnickers, hikers, bird watchers, skiers, etc. so you must know exactly who and what is behind any back stop you set up, out to several miles.
Like the others have said, it's far less trouble to join a club. CFB Borden used to let non-CF people into their Rod and Gun club. Lets you hunt(great, big, deer live on the Base. The R&G club feeds 'em in winter.) on the base with 8 hours, I think, of conservation work. No idea if they still do it though.

This is BS!

Stop spreading this crap. Im out in Parry Sound at the cottage and plink all the time. MNR doesnt care as long as you are safe and have targets set up or in your bag.

The belief that somehow you are guilty until proven innocent is a load of crap and I have specifically asked several MNR officers about it. Bottom line is they have no interest in showing up in court with no evidence to suggest you were hunting!

That said I do agree it makes more sense to join a club in the OP's scenario as I have already stated.

I will vouch for mlehtovaara here as I am in Parry Sound as well. The MNR here anyway have figured out if you shoot more than 5 shoots you are not hunting. For some reason I can never get those pesky deer to stand between me and my target. If in Londinium their stance is what you say I would pursue it above the local MNR. There are more reasons to own a gun than hunting, it just happens for me that hunting is the most fun part of owning one for me anyway.

as long as it is only a 22, i would do some bush wacking on crown land and find a nice backstop. from my limited understanding, you just have to make it clear you are target shooting. example, don't wear camo, have targets and more than a hand full of rounds.
