307 win, or 30-30?

I really like the feel of the 94. It has got to be one of the best balanced one hand carry rifles ever produced.
I might buy both. I can get the two for $500.

well there you go, most definitely buy them both! I have a 307, no problem finding ammo for me! I don't shoot it a hulofva lot, so a few boxes of ammo on hand lasts a long time. I don't know why some guys say: good luck finding ammo for the 307"! Perhaps they are Walmart shoppers.

resurrecting an oldie again

has anyone tried standard 308 brass?

the dimensions are the same, save the rim (what little there is of it)

I know there are guys reaming handi's to the 307/308 and running both through them, as well as the 356/358Win.

Must be thread resurrection day! Stay tuned for bear defence! ;)

I'd take the 30-30. 307 stuff can be difficult to find and difference between the two on a deer is negligible. And there's lever evolution ammo on the shelves for the 30-30 now, ups the ante a tiny bit. (Was it around THREE YEARS AGO when the thread was started?

;)

I'd think the lack of rim would cause feeding issues with a lever action.

Labrador 76 was playing in the archives me thinks. & BTW I still use a 30-30. :p

Just taking advice from my peers and using the search function!

I'd think the lack of rim would cause feeding issues with a lever action.

I read on marlin owners that a 336 will run rimless .308 WIN brass w/ no problems.

BTW. I want to re-chamber a Marlin 336 to .30-30 AI, 30 Lever Maximum or .307 WIN. Can anyone here recommend a smith to do this work? Anyone besides me ever read about this 30 lever maximun cartridge?

Thank You.

Lever maximum? Nope. 308 Marlin Xpress was supposed to be the end all for 30 30 sized levers but I suspect it'll go the way of the 307 too. Good calibres but they're attempting to fill a very small niche.

I tried that experiment with a Win 94 using empty, resized .308 brass and it worked just fine. Getting a fired, expanded case to extract might be something else again, but my experiment never progressed that far.

I find the problem with the .307 isn't the brass, but bullets; you're pretty much confined to using .30/30 bullets. I thought I might be able to get away with using round nose Hornadys or Core-Lokts, but the cannelure is in the wrong spot for crimping, and it leaves the O.A.L. too long to cycle through the action. Yet with that tubular magazine, you pretty much have to crimp. If Hawk bullets still ships to Canada, I might get some 190 gr. flat nose... should turn the .307 into a pretty good hammer.

I haven't tried the FTX or any of the mono bullets... the issue I have with .30-30 bullet is that most of them are designed to run at 2000 fps +/-, in the case of the 170 gr, and pushing it a few hundred fps faster may make things come apart or limit penetration from overexpansion. Even the factory .307 ammo seems to be a little on the soft side, considering that the .307 is supposed to be a step up from the .30-30 and might be used on much larger game. It might actually provide and excuse for the existance of the .30-30 Nosler Partition though. If I ever find any I'll have to give them a try.

I recieved 1 piece of advice when I was starting out

Never buy a 307 or a 308 marlin express, and if you do, buy all the ammunition and brass you can find whenever you can find it

My advice, never buy a 325wsm same reason as above

in COTW the original print on the 307 said something along the lines of since the 307 is stillborn, 30-30 AI might be the way to go for people who wanted a bit more oomph
