Makes more sense to display an Airsoft gun - probably less expensive too. There's the added utility of playing with the Airsoft rifle as well. IIRC, you can swap out a spring yielding >366fps with a spring yielding 320fps +\- for field use as long as you keep the original spring.

If the RCMP firearms lab could get the airsoft lower to fire just one live round, even if it destroyed the lower. You would find yourself in deep doo doo for possessing a prohib.

A dewat lower. Pick up a cheap lower, cut it up to dewat and dereg it, and whatever else they require.
By time your done, it'll look like hell on one side, as half the mag well would be missing, and probably a chunk where the trigger group is, but as long as it sits on the wall broken side in, it'll still make a slick looking wall hanger.

Why not just display the firearm as per the display regs (unloaded, disabled and anchored)?

I don't know.. The gear box bits are larger and stick out more then the hammer does on real steel. It might have to be a stripped airsoft lower.. I'm not really sure as I never had AR's when I played years ago.. GBB Rifles didn't exist back then either.
I also sure hope that Airsoft isn't prohibited.. I still have a few of my old KSC Glocks and a G&G AK104 kicking around in boxes somewhere. Haven't used them in years though.

Wouldn't you just posess an unregistered restricted if it's an AR lower?
Also I think it would still be an airsoft and not a replica because it taken apart and doesn't shoot 366 fps. Otherwise an airsoft gun that broke would be a replica.

The airsoft lower has a full auto trigger group and by putting it on a real ar upper would show the intent of making a prohibited firearm. Provided of course that the RCMP lab could get it to fire.
You were talking about an 80% lower. I agree that an 80% lower isn't airsoft, yes.
As stated before, Replica firearm are ILLEGAL, there are very few around before the ban in 98. You cannot acquire replica, you may keep existing pre 98 ones.
Airsoft guns today typically fall under Replica or uncontrolled firearm (ie 495fps air gun)
While it is possible to mount airsoft lower to a AR-15 upper (some guy even went to great length to convert an HK416 upper to fit internal of his airsoft gun so it is functional airsoft upper) mounting an airsoft lower on AR-15 upper is not the greatest idea. The US BATF has proved that you can fire single shot using a gas blowback airsoft lower (replaced every part other than lower receiver). Though the receiver blew at the 3rd round (and it cannot be mag fed) it suggest problem of mating airsoft lower and unmodified AR-15 upper -it can be interpretated as intent to make machine gun.
If I were you, I would just get a gas blowback airsoft gun and use it for display.

Airsoft is not a replica nor prohibited as long it does not fall below 355 or exceed 5XX feet per second in velocity otherwise it can be deem as replica. In regards with a lower receiver airsoft manufactures made their lower not to mate with real firearm receivers by their countries laws standards so its a big no.
