So, like many here I purchased a government model 1911A1 from Can Am {thanks BTW}. The panels were cracked, the trigger sucks and the slide felt like there were corn cobs and broken crockery in between it and the frame. There was a section of dust hood that was making contact with the slide as well.
For the princely sum of $170 invested, I thought I would try to rectify much of this myself, well myself a tub of valve lapping compound and a dremmel
.
The good news is the slide and frame fit is tight and after the valve compound I swear it glides like butter it smoothed right out, the trigger bow to frame fit is likewise smooth as silk.
The dremmel made short work of the dust hood and it no longer contacts the slide...all is good, save and accept the bluing which is now totally fu<ked
Another interesting observation, when I was smoothing everything out it appeared to work down to an active rust layer once the bluing came out!? As I was working the slide, the compound turned from a blue-grey colour to brown!!
Are there any suggestions to get the most out of CT/Outters cold blue solution, without getting into hot tank type work? I would very much like to achieve a 1970's colt revolver Royal Blue, but in reality some metal protection would be a settled for second choice.
Thanks in advance,
