Hi.

With my 305, seems it short strokes with the norinco 7.62x51 ammunition. Bolt will often fail to cycle next round or even fail to lock back when last round has been fired off.
Before buying the 7.62 ammo, ive bought some generic .308 from walmart and that stuff fired off fine?

Possible issues or just crap ammo?

sounds like your gas port is plugged. make sure the hole in the gas cylinder lines up with the hole in the barrel.... if it doesn't shim it as required or drill the hole in the gas cylinder to match.

If the hole looks good, do a tilt test to make sure the oprod is not binding up. If you don't know how to do this, just look it up on you tube, its quite simple and there is a lot of good videos on how to do it.

I would check out everything LordEvil has listed so far as your culprit. Not sure how experienced you are with the M-14 or how many rounds of both types you have fired to base your conclusion,..so therefore I will remind you to make sure you don't unknowingly ride your support hand on your op rod during firing.

From my experience with the green box 762X51 ammo, it was bang on 762NATO velocity when chronied by me, and cycled my fine for many hundred of rounds in mine.

It is a little curious however,... that you said commercial .308 cycled properly. Was it 150 gr 308? 165gr 308? 180gr 308? And how many rounds for a comparison? You know that any of the problems Lord Evil has listed to check for, may have been overcome with 308 ammo of heavier bullet weights 168-180, but in properly working M-14's, add extra stress to the operating system and cause premature wear and tear.

To be 100% objective here, even though this Norinco ammo was delivering velocity in my 22" bbl right on NATO specs, it doesn't mean it's getting it done with the right powder burn rate and therefore giving proper 762NATO gas impulses for your M-14's operating system to work at it's best.

I'm sure there is a million rounds of this through Chinese M-14s by now however in Canada, and there hasn't been any short stroking complaints I've had or read.:canadaFlag:

Before you check anything mentioned above.... The First thing to check for is carbon build up inside gas plug and inside piston.
When those parts are loaded up with carbon, your rifle will short stroke.

Barring that, have you changed the recoil/opprod spring? Some of the shorties seem to run the norc ammo better with the factory norc spring.

Check for carbon fouling in plug and piston and let us know.

An m14 gas piston or cylinder should NEVER be lubed. It is designed to run dry , and yes, lubing it will cause problems/ malfunctions

There is a screw on the side of the gas port turn that it should allow more gas to go through and cycle properly. Or switch the ammo I found americain egale 308 to have problems with some cycling some not (they were also flyers)

Also make sure there is grease on the slide rail for the op rod (out side the rifle)

Hi.

Did the tilt test and checked the gas system. Gas plug was somewhat loose so i tightened that. Only thing i can think of is when the guide rod is racked back, You can defiantly feel a slight resistance near the back of the action. Did the tilt test without the bolt in the gun. The guide rod didn't want to move unless the gun was on a noticeable angle.

thoughts?

Edit: forgot to mention this resistance is still noticeable regardless if stock is on or not.

Is the oprod guide loose on the barrel? Perhaps it shifted and is making the oprod rub? Pretty common as well
A loose gas plug however, will absolutely cause short stroking, 100% on that.

I'm retired from M14 tunin. Other's may have someone they could recommend. I'd have a look at Tactical Teacher's (aka Hungry) clinic schedule and try and make it to one. You'll learn a tonne and tune her up just dandy ;)

Any chance you have one of Marstar's "buffers" on it...I had one on mine and it was often touchy (didn't seem to fully cycle) depending on ammo.

Yomomma hit the nail on the head. The guide rod is indeed rubbing on the barrel. thanks.

I had the same issue on my M14 a good grease job fixed the problem and i have fired at least 500 rounds of the 7.62nato surplus from canadammo.com with no issues.. as for tuning i got lucky and had a good one shipped to me
