Big Game - Caribou/Moose - What Rifle Would You Use?

Myself, Savage scoped package rifles in 30-06 are perfect. Great caliber, get a 180 grain soft point bullet (I like Federal myself) and you'll have no problems taking a moose or caribou down. Also with the Savage package models it will be less than $1000 for sure and very little time wasted on sight in/zeroing , right out of the box they are almost dead on in my experience.
The most important factor which will dictate your succes is proper shot placement. Bullet size and speed mean nothing unless you can put t where it needs to go. Savage trophy hunter Xp rifles come in a few configurations and many different calibers all will retail well under a thousand, and you could even upgrade the scope and still come in within budget. Magnum calibers are not needed. I see far too many people going with magnum calibers. Anything bigger than a 6.5mm bullet will do fine on moose. If you're new to shooting center fire, the 7mm-08 is a nice caliber, good performance and mild recoil. Others like the 270, 308, 30-06 are fine choices as well.
Thanks Longwalker and everyone else, this is 1000x better than the online stores (Cabelas) and other online sites that provide very undetailed comments/reviews. With what I've read so far, I am quite please and slowly becoming more educated as to what type of rifle range (.270 to 30-06 and then-some). The .270 and 30-06 Winchester cartridge sounds pretty intriguing.
.338 winmag for two reasons, 1 the little bit extra "reach out and smack something factor" and 2 moose country is bear country and it's nice to have a little extra firepower in camp. I hunt moose in northern BC every year and I've never had a moose take more than a few steps after being smacked with a .338

These are easy rifles for a newer shooter to Handel
They are less recoil you won't be afraid of your rifle
Or worried how close your eye is to your scope
You won't go to the range and shoot off 40 or 60 rounds in your 338
We're i can pratice my shooting with my 6.5 and try and make single holes with many bullets
You don't need a magnum yet but it is nice to have one .

Please don't show any ignorance, as I am not a huge rifle enthusiast, especially between the rimfire's and centerfire's. I'm very aware of these forum expectations of the newbies to know this and that...as I am apart of the DooTalk forum and see it ALL the time. If you have nothing of any value for me to know, then don't post, simple as that. My ignorant response may invite yourself or others to defend from my reply, but lets just save each others 'breath' [typing] per-say.
I think the response was do to the fact that the difference between a centerfire or rimfire cartridge is part of the firearms safety course and test most of us have had to take at some point.
The difference is a centerfire has a primer in the center of the base of the cartridge, similar to all modern shotgun shells. A rimfire the rim contains the primer.
As a rule modern rimfires are .22 caliber or smaller and not suited to hunting big game.
I'll add to the recommendations of non magnum cartridges 6.5mm and up. You should go to your local supplier and see what they stock for ammunition. Not to be rude but your lack of basic firearms knowledge leads me suspect you're very inexperienced. .30-30 has very cheap ammo and will allow you to practice lots and contrary to popular belief is very capable of killing moose within 200 yards provided you can put your bullets where they need to go and are willing to wait for a broadside or slightly quartering away shot.

Not all families are brought up with the same fundamentals. Mine was being brought up by just my father, who didn't hunt, nor did I have family that offered, or said 'yes/okay' when asked. Don't get me wrong, I've hunted a lot, but more-so with just the trusty 12 Gauge.
