I am looking for a Mauser. I know nothing about the Mauser. Did they make a short one like a mosin m44? Also which ones are straight pull and which are turn bolt?

No mauser is straight pull.

Turn bolts are K98K type.

German are the best in my opinion, but you wouldn't want one of those.

Some czech ones are short. Prewar cz33 is short.

I suggest something in 8mm as its a real hard hitter. Its a bit expensive, but then any rifle(except rimfire and .223 etc) is expensive to shoot.

the Swedish mausers are very well crafted, and are flat shooters, and there seem to be many of them around.

the Nazi mausers are probably the most expensive overall.

some of the South American ones are really cool, with their great cresting and pedigree(some are FN, some are made by Mauser)

I like the Yugo and Czech ones, as they are a bit shorter(like you spoke about). I don't like those huge long rifles as much, just personal preference, no judgement.

I also prefer the "later" ones, hehe, if you can call it that. WW1 and later kinda thing.

I would like 3 - 5 of them. A Yugo M48, a Czech wartime one(or another Yugo, wartime FN made), a Swede with the fancy sights and a Columbian or Brazilian, maybe an FN made one, in 30-06. And a good Wermacht one too. I do have my M48, and I want a good Swede one time too.

Keep in mind that they come in 6.5x55 Swedish, 7mm Spanish, .308, 30-06 and 8mm Mauser. Oh, some of the older ones come in oddball stuff, 9.3 etc, but I don't know much about that stuff.

Just get one tho :) they are fun!

Try to get one with a matching bolt and receiver, as the action will be smoother and slicker that way.

I'm throwing my vote behind a Czech vz.24.

Pretty close to a German K98 and a lot cheaper, has more historical interest than the Yugos and are damn fine guns.

Funny. You had all sorts of criticisms in a different thread for a rifle design you know nothing about.

Any way, what is your budget? Some inexpensive but high quality Mausers are available from Tradeex. The Chilean M98's made by Steyr are some of the best made milsurps and you can get them in 7.62.

A nice RC K98k is a bit more expensive but has more history too it. Czech VZ 24's are fairly cheap and very well made. The Yugo M48's are around and are absolute bargains at the price you can pick them up for.

1 have 4 Mausers. 2 in 6.5mm and 2 in 8mm. This is my order of preference. My first Mauser was a Swede, that is my benchmark to measure all others. It is a Carl Gustaf 1901 Swedish M96 with 29" barrel (6.5x55mm) with straight bolt. Shoots like a lazer beam. This is my favourite rifle in my collection. Second would be my K98k in 8x57mm with bent bolt. The 8mm really shines once you get out to 400+ metres. For the size of the round, I don't find the recoil that bad at all, next would be my Swedish Mauser Short Rifle M38 by Husqvarna (24" barrel). My last Mauser is a near new or unissued M48 BO Yugo Mauser, made after 1956... Swedes are still by far the best value in my opinion. Ammo and reloading components are readily available.

the VZ-24 and Yugo guns are good starters they both go for $400 in good shape. keep an eye out. if you really like the mauser then sell it and buy a german one later.

I just picked up a 1923 CG Swedish Mauser. My first true "Collectible Milsurp", and I think I've set the bar high.

It shoots like a dream.

The quality for the price is unbelievable.

Cheers

Glad you are happy, BMcK, but I have an unsettling bit of news for you: they are almost ALL that good.

For sheer quality rated against dollars, there is no better deal on the market than a Swedish Mauser.

And I'm the guy with 20-odd Lee-Enfields and a dozen Rosses on my rack.

Enjoy!
