I think in your price range the Franchi Instinct "L" is your best bet... NOT the "SL."
For what you will pay for a Instinct you can get a well cared for browning or beretta if you shop around . I had an Instinct L in 20 ga and was not impressed with it at all . heavy long trigger travel and the forearm shot loose in reasonably shot order .

I don't own an Instinct, but there are a half dozen at the club, guys that are shooting moderate volume, and they all love their guns... I shot one round of clays with an Instinct L, and found it well balanced, easy swinging and pleasant to shoot... and I took a few quarters with it, and a round of cokes, from two Browning's and a Beretta... how's that for a review!?!?

I picked up a Belgian Browning Superposed (1937 DOM) a few years ago at the Calgary gunshow for $1200. The gun is still super tight despite having been shot enough to wear the finish off the trigger.

Deals on good shotguns exist. You just have to be patient. Junk on sale is always around. There's a reason you see it clogging the EE like cigarette butts outside the bar.
