Model B (.08) for German Army Service During the Second World War, Germany issued a number of small arms not internally developed in order to fill gaps in production. An especially large variety of pistols were issued, and among these were a relatively small number of "B .08" pistols. These were issued to German Police and "certain military units." In general, lower-priority organizations such as the police could not get first line German-made weapons during the war, so external contracts such as this are not unusual. These were made for only from 1942 to '44 and are substantially Second Model B pistols. The only changes of which I am aware are to markings. Reportedly, Stars issued to WWII German troops do not carry Nazi proofmarks, the only foreign arms exempted from this requirement. But, I have encountered some owners with overtly German proofed weapons, so this may be untrue, or inconsistently applied. All these pistols should have the last 3 digits of the serial number on all major component. Note that marks along the lines of "P'08" on the chamber hood or "F. Patr. 08" are just ways to denote 9 mm Parabellum, and do not mean it was necessarily German issue. For extra confirmation, check the date of proofing. they will most likely display date codes N, Ñ or O. Positive identification of these pistols, to me, still seems difficult.

The P and X marks are proof house.

Star Model B pistols were issued to various border police units and police forces in Germany after 1946. German made pistols were banned from issue in the occupied zones by treaty, so Star Model B's and other pistols were issued. Then the French built P38,PP and PPK's for issue to german police and military units. That's when the Star's were put in storage and then sold as surplus. The British issued star Model B pistols for covert ops in ww2.

The current batch is a Lever Arms import, I see 'em at LEver and Frontier. They are russian Capture and definitely wartime. Seems like a good buy at $350.

My local store has about 15 or 20 of these in. Checked over all of them, picked out a nice one. Unfortunately, none of them were actually German contract pistols, but still a nice example none the less. They all fell within the known serial number ranges for the Bulgarian contract.

Not sure about that. There is an entirely separate serial number range for the Bulgarian contract pistols that is quite well established and accepted as fact based on production and shipping records.

Tried to find the page with the serial number ranges and supporting documentation, but having a hard time of it on my iPhone. Either way, the serials are established enough that any pistol falling within the Bulgarian number ranges with WaA's are automatically deemed faked.

Edit Note: still can't find the page I'm looking for, but a quick Google search for 'bulgarian contract star b serial numbers' comes up with the serial number ranges, as well as a sizable amount of info on a variety of collectors forums.

Well that's good to know! I actually ordered one on the assumption that they were actually Bulgarian contract guns like the Russian rearsenalled ones that have been selling in the states. That's what I actually wanted! I figured the chance that they were legitimately German was slim to none in these quantities.

To be honest, I would be shocked if these WEREN'T Russian capture/refinished pieces. Can't say for sure on it, but all the signs in regards to the condition, the refinishing, the plum-coloured parts, etc, are there to indicate that they've gone through Russian hands.

That, and, I would be somewhat surprised if it was mere coincidence that Russian refinished pistols were cropping up in the US, yet we got non-Russian refinished pistols in Canada at the same time.

I ordered 3x pistols from Lever.

All German contract (N series with ~ over top "1944" I believe). These are RC pistols, buffed and re-blued. However, all were matching (minus mags), silly as the Ruskies actually crossed out matching numbers on two of the pistols and re-numbered the main parts (rack number?). Nice pistol with solid site picture.

They might make for a decent restoration in that case. I'm just not a fan of that awful looking Russian bluing.

If they were all original, $350 would be too good to be true. I can't recall ever seeing an original example for sale on CGN, but I imagine it would bring at least double.
