Hello All,

So I'm contimplating a new Toy, mostly for 3 gunin/action shooting in a shotgun.

I believe the Mossberg 590 is the most used for this and likely for a reason.
There's 3 variations, so which is best and why ?

A) the Flex Tactical with adjustable stock length (which I'm leaning towards)
B) the regular stock special purpose
C) and the one with a Tri-rail and speed feed stock....
all are 9 rnd friendly

Any advantages / disadvantages to which one ? is pistol grip better for any shooting reasons ? or worse for another reason, etc..
If the regular stock version better with option of 13" stock, if i'm not a big guy (for shorter reach)
is the tri-rail with speed stock do anything to better competitiveness ?

Remington has an express tactical as well, but with 7 rnds...is that worth consideration, but with round extended tube ?

Is an extended tube really necessary on the Mossberg ? I'm guessing 9 rnds is enough, cause can't start with more than than in standard division...longer tub only means pausing to load more....

Any other model worth considering, but only if under $700....

Please advise.... on this and any cool accessories to go with it for use in competitions.

for a pump get a plain jane 870 with a 26"barrel add a 5shot extension and off to the races you go! tactical shotguns are not the best tool for threegun

I love my 590 for 3gun. If you go for a pistol grip, just know that the mossberg has a tang safety so you will have to break grip to engage or disengage the safety. I have modded mine a bit for 3-gun...hogue stock and foregrip are a big improvement over stock and provide positive grip in any weather, oversized metal safety (stock one is plastic), Velcro 6 shot side saddle, +2 mag tube extension (not essential for the reasons you mentioned but I like it :) ), and I recently had it tapped for chokes. It is a workhorse and I sure don't have to worry about babying it!

Does the Benelli come with at least 8 rnd tube or what options and what price range is that ? Regardless, I promised the Fiance no more $$ on guns till way into next year...and now, the gun nut that I am, I'm looking for new shotgun :D;)

I'll be trying to sell other shotgun (defender) to get this one, so I can justify only few hundred bucks.. though she really wouldn't give me hard time, a promise when trying to save for other things, is a promise...but whats $300...so Benelli is likely out of the question.

What are pro/cons to the 590 tactical versus regular stock style for shootability, functionality when reloading, etc... ?

And one suggested 26"barrel 870 Express... any thoughts on that from others here ?

The pistol grip isn't too bad for the load two, I have one on my M4 and it doesn't really seem to interfere much. The sidesaddle however, makes a load 4 technique very challenging!

Holy, load 2, load 4 methods ? now I'm stumped...any video links to what those are ?

If you can wait 4 weeks, come to the IPSC Shotgun Provincials at EESA the weekend of August 10/11.
You`ll see a wide variety of guns and loading techniques.

Better yet, register and shoot the match!

As for links to loading techniques, look at the top of the gear section in the IPSC Ontario forums, or Youtube.

I am considering shooting the provincials, and was thinking maybe the 590 would be more competitive over my current winchester defender 18.5", with only 7 rnds in tube... or should I just buy extension tube for my gun ?
Is the mossberg or benelli or other a better gun for this intended use ? or all the same ?

Heres a rough idea of the loading methods. There are a lot better ones on youtube though.

If you're planning on running a pump, then the 590 is a good choice for the money. Thats what I was using for the load 2 method in the vid. Personally, I would stay away from pistol grips. Their cool and all but IMHO they don't benefit in any way. And although the load2 is possible with it, its just not ideal.

if you are going pump then 590 or supernova is the way to go, the lifter gets out of the way when you load so it doesnt eat your thumb and they are both very good for the money.

Yep...getting a Nova, and a Nordic extension would likely cost the same as a Mossberg 590A1. You would be much better off. Mind you, I liked my 590 when I had it, they are built like tanks, the Nova with a 26" barrel gives you more options, imho.

so a super nova with long barrel isn't too long and awkward for transitioning, etc.. ? and with extension, how many rounds does it hold in tube ?
is the super nova better ? if so, why ? smoother/better action ? Hoping for detailed characteristics on the differences from anyone who's experienced these. eg. one guy said lifter gets out of way for loading, thats good info...any more like that ?
and what are these extra options it gives you ? It comes with 24-26-28" barrels, why the 26 instead of 24 ? tactical are usually 18-20".
How much does the extension cost ?

the mossberg and benelli pumps are the only one where the lifter gets out of the way. you can get up to +8 extensions for both guns so how many rounds the gun holds will depend on the extension, also you have about 8" infront of the muzzle where you can have extension and not hit it when shooting. in fact its not a bad idea to have the extension longer than the barrel for when you have to dump it in a barrel and move to a different gun.

barrel length is personal preference but 22-24 is the most common compromise length for speed of transition vs tightness of pattern and velocity of shot.

benelli will be a lighter gun than the mossberg because large amount of the receiver are plastic, also I believe you can open the benelli loading port up more and since its made for 3.5" shells its longer to start off with (bigger=easier to load)

You get the Comfortech stock with the Super Nova, both are 3 1/2" guns, so you get the bigger loading port.
If you want a tactical type gun, go for the Mossberg....if you want a 3 Gun platform, or IPSC gun, go for the Benelli. 26" would be a good choice.
