308 M1 Garand with Norico ammo issues

If the norinco 7.62x51 is loaded as hot as my norinco 5.56 ammo them it may explain many things.
Try to shoot some remington umc 308 150 gr fmj. Around 17.50$ the box of 20.

Can you point me in the direction of the info on increased wear from Norinco 223?

One of the guys had his PE90 barrel sectioned if memory serves and it was toast very early in its life, I'll dig up the post. He had shot a lot of yellow box and it was the smith's opinion ammo quality seriously accelerated wear. All conjecture, and take from it what one may, I'd still buy decent ammo and hoard Norc for a rainy day.

Norinco 223 is 70/30 brass cases and 90/10 gilding metal jacket. I am curious as to what this smith felt was the actual cause?

Elvis the round going down the tube I wouldn't worry too much about. As already stated, the bullets themselve should not present little if any extra accelerated wear on your rifling.

Still,...if your rifle is ejecting this way only with 762X51Norko, there is obviously a gas impulse/port pressure differential from commercial .308, causing a very different timing in the operation of extraction and ejection.

Your Garand has a different gas system than an M-14. The port pressure/dwell time at the gas port may be too high with the Nork 762. As I have posted several times already, it functions great in my M-14, the velocities look like 762NATO bang on, however I cannot attest to what powder burn rate and charge is used to acheive this, hence possible accelerated wear from port pressure differential from 762NATO ammo spec.

I'll say do not shoot it anymore. Find something that matches USGI port pressures for the original '06 or commercial ammo designed to work well in the Garand's port pressure dwell time requirements, but in .308 flavour.

I agree I will no longer fire the Norc ammo through it, only NATO spec 7.62x51 or quality commercial 308. Thank you for the help.

"...the adjustable gas plug..." Totally unnecessary marketing thing.
"...extractor or ejector problem..." Ejector as I recall, but have a look at the gas port too. .308 Win M1 Rifles need a bigger gas hole than a .30-06 rifle. The exact diameter is on line. Naturally, I forget where. One of the U.S. based forums, I think.

sunray forgive my ignorance, check size of gas port where ? On the barrel or gas piston ? Thank you. The barrel should be ok, it is a purpose made 308 M1 barrel.

He means the hole on the barrel. It will be the appropriate size since as you say, this is a purpose built .308 barrel. This is only an issue if you convert a .30-06 barrel.
