Anyone do this? I live within 5 km's of the US border. Land in this area of the US is unbelievably cheap. Aside from the ATF forms, the non-resident hunting licenses and tags, and veterinary paperwork, what other complications might one face? Transportation of game - small and migratory. Big game is a problem, as Quebec no longer allows importation of animals unless the spine and head are removed. How do you legally transport a big game animal with no head?

We get all of our meat processed before we come back. Never had any issues.

Cheers,

Unlike Quebec and Ontario, land for hunting is endless in the New England States. I've hunted Maine a few times where there is much more deer than people. Therefore, no need to purchase property. Like others had suggested, have the deer processed by a local butcher where you are hunting........don't forget to bring a large cooler.

CBSA has never once asked me about heads/hides or meat when returning from a hunt in the US. They were singularly focused on whether I had guns and since I’m always bow hunting they did not pay it any mind, literally I have had more trouble coming back from shopping trips.

There are some hurdles with regards to taxation as a foreigner owning land in the US that you should learn about before getting too excited.
I very recently was looking into something kinda along these lines though not for hunting, and gotta kinda lost in all the legacy taxes and other stuff.

No real taxation issues for owning property.
Simple process to purchase & great value on incredible hunting land.
Now, as is life, if you rent, lease or sell, income must be reported for tax purposes.
Usually meat is processed, no concerns returning.

Only 27,000 deer harvested in Maine on 65,000 permits

NYS 2017 Deer Harvest Estimate

Hunters harvested an estimated 203,427 deer during the 2017-18 hunting seasons, about 5% fewer than in 2016-17. The 2017-18 estimated deer take included 95,623 antlerless deer and 107,804 antlered bucks. Statewide, this represents a 10% decline in antlerless harvest and nearly identical buck harvest as in 2016.

Two items of note from the season: hunters took a greater percentage of older bucks and the portion of successful hunters who reported their harvest increased.

With 53.3% of the adult buck harvest as 2.5 years or older, hunters took an estimated 57,494 older bucks, setting a record in total number and greatest percentage of older bucks in the harvest. Many hunters are choosing to voluntarily Let Young Bucks Go and Watch Them Grow.

Deer
The portion of successful hunters who reported their harvest as required by state law increased from 44% in recent years to 50% in 2017. Along with our Take It · Tag It · Report It campaign, DEC has made the process of harvest reporting substantially easier for hunters, providing phone, internet, and mobile app options. Harvest reports are critically important for accurate monitoring of deer harvests, and we hope hunters increasingly contribute to the management process by complying with the reporting requirements.

I've hunted all across the USA from corner to corner and I also own deeded property there in the State of Florida and I have never had any problems hunting, paying taxes, or bring game back. As said Processed takes away all the issues.

do you require license to hunt there? if so, is it difficult to obtain?

Of course a hunting license is required. Not difficult to obtain when I hunted there. I purchased it over the counter. Best to have your provincial card or proof that you have taken a hunters education course.
