'back up' rifle when hunting

If this thread is to continue I guess I would also like to know what caliber your primary and secondary rifles are in? Are both rifles same caliber or do you pair two caliber rifles together to broaden your horizons?
 
Depends on the hunt.
Moose, the 308 Norma Mag is with me along with the Ruger in 308win or the BLR 358win.
The collection has grown a bit and the Tikka M65 is a likely candidate this year as well.
How and where I hunt is always a consideration as to what comes with me.
Sometimes an old beater is all that's required.

I always carry a backup rifle.

What it will be depends on what I am hunting and where.
Anything from a 243 right up to my 338 Win Mag.

One of my 30-06's or 30 cal magnums will be the primary rifle [usually]

If my quest is deer only, then lighter rifles are the order of the day.

Any trip not involving a bushplane and/or packpack will see me dragging two rifles along. Usually they will be quite different, like a light and a medium, medium and a heavy, or a light and a heavy. Closer to home it is more likely to be a general purpose bolt gun with some reach (STW, .300 of one flavor or other, or occasionally a .257 Weatherby )and a heavy long range rifle. Much of my local hunting is for the kids now, and I will only take one for myself. That one is likely to be a dedicated long range rig, but not always.

On any hunting trip which requires a longer drive to the hunt location or when I'm camping out in the bush, I always bring a back up with me. Usually its a different chambering because I don't have that many rifles chambered for the same cartridge. Before the hunt/season I decide what my primary and back up rifles will be and practice with both.

Now that my daughter has been hunting with me my backup rifle tends to be something she can shoot as well, although I'm part way through the build of her own dedicated backup. 6.5x55 should be good.
 
My main rifle is a mossberg 1550 in 3006 with a set of william fully adjustable rife sights, see through millet rings, and a 1.5-4.5 bushnell elite 3200.

My back up is ol faithful, trust worthy, sported enfield chambered in the infamous 303brit! It maybe my truck gun but I take care of her.
 
Interesting thread so far. How many of you are torn each time between which gets primary spot and which gets left on the bench? :bump:
 
I always carry a second rifle, depending on the hunt determines the caliber. Could be a 270, 7mm08, STW, 30-06.....whatever. I have only needed it once due to a broken scope. I also always bring along a shotgun and a 22 of some sort.

Pack hunts are different, I just bring one rifle, and usually a fixed power scope such as a FX2 6x leupold.
 
My backup rifle is nearly identical to my main rifle, same chambering, same action, same stock dimensions, same scope. By keeping everything the same, I only need to know one trajectory, and one wind drift, and everything operates the same.

I have a fair number of rifles to chose from but have a few favorites that I use more often than the others. I try to use several different ones as my primary throughout the seasons as well as several different backups. That way I sort of cycle through them over the years. I'll use a different set of rifles for elk, another set for moose, another for bear and sometimes two different primary rifles that get used depending on the terrain I'm in for deer seasons.
