Hey guys, well, it's that time of the year again. After a successful, short stint of nice spring weather here in S. Ontario...we got nailed with a heavy dose of wet, hot, muggy weather. Groundhog hunting was pretty good before that for me, then all that moisture really seemed to accelerate the hay's growth. High heat and jungle-like hay kind of limited the possibilities but with hay getting cut this time of the year, things are looking up. If you're the hunter that is. :) Got out almost 2 weeks ago, and spotted 6 of them over the course of 3 different farms. 4/6 fell to my new groundhog rifle eating hand-rolled 55gr. V-Max loads. I didn't miss any though... One took off the moment I spotted it and the second gave me enough time to deploy the bipod and lay down before vanishing for the count. I have ways of dealing with that situation too, but none of my tricks paid off on that occasion.

Anyhow, here is one with it's pretty side showing, don't really know what everyone's appetite for graphic photos is like. 2/4 I got were younger than this one, the V-Max did a real number on them. The XCR is a rifle I always wanted to try, but I'm not a shooting range guy..so something non-restricted for hunting was a must. Trigger is a bit heavy, but it's shooting pretty straight. Took the advice of a friend who has one and got a compensator for it, amazing thing that is. Basically eliminates muzzle jump. .223 isn't a heavy-hitter in the recoil dept., but I found the rifle a bit jumpy compared to my heavy bolt action .223. The compensator makes this feel like a 22Mag! Groundhogs out to 150 yards aren't any issue so far, hope to test it on longer targets when more hay is cleared. Great way to spend a summer day...and the ONLY summer days I don't daydream about fall grouse hunting!

Hey FLHTCUI~the scope is a Vortex Viper HS, 4-16x44 with a BDC reticle. The mount is an American Defense "Recon", quick-detach. I think rings would have been as good/better, but I may get a red dot next year and wanted the ability to go back and forth if req. Probably won't, but I think it looks pretty good anyway.

Very nice: I've been waiting for the hay to be cut for a few weeks now, and it has been too long for well over a month to see anything. Unfortunately there is probably little to see anyway, as I have been enjoying the "scenery" so much for the last few years that there is little in the way of seeing: Time to expand the target group to include other pests like Starlings and Cowbirds. I don't remember whose signature line it is, but yes, only accurate rifles are interesting!

What area do you shoot? It has been suggested that other local people might require my services in removing woodchucks, but I've never formally been asked by anyone outside the grapevine. I should do some door knocking, and deploy my 6.5X55 on things more substantial than paper.

.22LRGUY, wasnt knocking your choice of mounting the scope to your gun ;)
But, You are right a set of rings would have looked a little cleaner and it is Your gun after all.
Thanks Again for the entertainment .
Am envious here in BC as I have to travel far and wide to shoot those vermin or derivatives of the species.
Closest are 5 hours away on Private Property and as far away as Alberta for them gophers that are no where near as large.
Tight Groups,
Rob

Thanks Rob. I flip-flopped on that mount (due to it's price) but when I tried high rings they just cleared the rail...but the scope felt too low. So, it would have required extra high rings and I thought they'd look a bit odd. Anyhow, I'm pleased with the set-up. :) Groundhogs around here are limited to a relatively small area from a hunting perspective, but, they are pretty wide spread. You're more likely to see them in towns where they're 100% safe than you are out in the country. One of the farms I hunt is just under 3 hours to get to, but I pass a groundhog or 2 within 5 minutes of leaving my house...eating grass/clover on the grass the town cuts along an industrial road. lol Long story short, varmint hunting is as much about the drive out to the country and a nice hike as it is the trigger time.

nice catch, do you guys eat them or just dump them in the ditch?
ive searched a long time on CGN without results, how do you call those in english, hogs?

too bad the only one i saw are too close to the road, asking "farmers" here isn't successful either...

^^ Usually groundhogs, but sometimes affectionately called "hay pigs". 2 of the farmers I know call them "those little bastards". :) On the "access" issue...you might get lucky and meet someone with property but more likely, it's a door-knocking thing. Recently, looking to expand my own territory, I've done a little door knocking myself. The last places I asked, the farmer was more than happy to have me shoot them, but wouldn't let me~his wife actually likes having them around. That was a first!

I have several friends with farms who would happily let me get rid of the little buggers. Problem is, none of us have seen any the past few years. Too many coyotes nowadays.

I'm not blaming the coyotes around here for decimating the woodchuck population... It is good that there are few left, for the condition is a testimony to my abilities in erradicating them, they cause, and have potential to be the cause of immense damage. But yes, success results in nothing left to shoot.

An easy out of what?

An easy out/excuse...

They're out there... Just gotta find them.
My last day out I sat in a field... Immediately three targets presented at almost the same time..
I'm sitting there thinking.."who do I shoot first"

Who's making excuses? If we don't see any at the farm, we don't see any...I don't know what your problem is. There's still lots of coons around and lots of crows to shoot but that's it really. If I said nobody has seen any jackrabbits in years would you call me out on that too? There aren't any, and if you ask why, most people will say it's because of the same reason it's hard to find a groundhog. Coyotes are seen quite often, usually when they're harassing the cattle and horses.
