I have a chance to pick up a 700 sps in 270 wsm for pretty cheap. I'm not really a fan of the sps rifle but was thinking in getting it and using it for just the action as its in the caliber I want and will probably end up replacing everything else.
What's everyone's thoughts on this? Is it better to start off with a higher end Remington action?
Thanks
Dan

essentially, all the Remington actions are the same, the only difference in any of them is some are stainless while others are steel and have that black finish on them..

I just decided to pull the trigger on a similar project. After a lot of looking around I bought a 700 sps in 300 Win Mag at Lebaron's on sale for $479 with the intention of replacing the barrel, trigger, stock and bottom metal eventually.

For that price, how can anyone refuse?

There is no higher end Remington action. The action found on a Police or a BDL is the same as found on the SPS, just with a different finish. The only exception to this is the Ti actions and the custom shop will handpick and accurize the actions they use.

OP, I gambled by picking a rifle for donor parts and it paid off pretty darn good. left only action and trigger group, didn't have enough dough to true the action. Custom stainless barrel in 6BR, and Eliseo stock. Exhausted my budget and had to buy cheaper scope, though it has 50mm obj lens and nice turrets. Long story short - half MOA all day, conservatively, most of the time way less. What I am trying to say, keeping the action may work. Though if you think about trueing it then it is just another 100$ or so to get custom built action. I was biting my nails, tough call really. I got lucky
