I recently discovered that I can shoot past 1 MOA at 500 yards sooo.... I am looking to build a remington 700 style tactical precision rifle. I found the stock I want: http://www.wolverinesupplies.com/details/10248/JAE-700-Gen-3-Remington-700-Stock-Information.aspx I want to stick to that stock. But, I am having troubles finding all the other stuff, (I am new to putting together rifles) I need a good tactical action(in .308 and with a spiral fluted bolt) ,A heavy precision tactical barrel (in .308 too, with a muzzel break would be great) Trigger assembly (somewhat between 2-4 lbs and with a mag well, for detachable mags)

What is your recommended setup, and how much will it cost roughly?

If I sound like I don't know anything, its probably cause I don't.

Thanks, Jake

Mind if I make a recommendation? I'm fairly new to long range shooting myself, but why go to remington? The savage is obviously working for you. Why not just take the barrel and stock off the action (and trigger if you desire) and get different stuff. There are pre-chambered barrels available that allow you to install it yourself with go/no go gauges. Plus you could get a similar stock for the savage. Check out these links.

Some quick googling will produce more info for you. That savage is a good starting point. Get the bolt fluted, get a jewel trigger, pick a chassis and barrel, get a go no go gauge set and you're set!

There have been other threads on here about the JAE, I think you will be waiting months for the stock, unless the situation has changed. As well, I don't think a spiral bolt necessarily improves accuracy. Having built a couple of rifles, I will say that you biggest costs will be 1) glass 2) the stock 3) the action (but only if you're getting something nice, a donor action can be had for cheap) 4) the barrel 5) the bottom metal. It all adds up quick, so one thing you could do is start with a use rifle that has the action you want to build on and go from there. Actions don't go bad, barrels do, but I think few people on here ever shoot out a barrel.

If you're on a budget, I'd say Savage is the way to go. Choate makes stocks that have gret features and are not expensive. The prefit barrels from Shillen etc. and the barrel nut on Savages reduce cost as well.

Contacting your local Provincial Rifle Association would be the first place to start. Get out to an Introductory Day if possible, or go to a match or practice day and talk to the shooters there.

Jake, I have the JAE 100 and a buddy has the JAE 700 and they are awesome. You will probably have to wait a few months to get one though, just be patient - it's worth it.

You could try calling J Allen to see if they have any around from a cancelled order or something like that - it could cut your lead time to a couple weeks but you would have to accept the configuration.

I went to a tactical precision marksmanship training course. Rob Furlong (if you don't know him it's a shame) told me that the savage trophy hunter is exactly what it's name states. It's a hunting rifle, it should stay that way. He also said 1 MOA at 500 yds is crazy good for that rifle.

He recommended to get a Remington 700 in .308, he said its the best entry level rifle. He suggested to get a heavier barrel and a more tolerant action.

I have a heavy barrel Remington 700 x trigger and the savage 10 fcp-sr, both shoot well but much prefer the savage trigger.
