Hello, I was wanting to know how low you can mount a zeiss conquest on a winchester model 70 pre-64? I would like to use my leupold dual dovetail bases and as low of ring as possible. My .270 sporter is a 1962 model so I have as much bolt handle clearance as was offered for the pre-64's.

I know my best bet is to try it and get a feel but was looking for any idea before hand on what to expect. All my google foo searches have turned too vague as the conversation always flips to a post 64 model or a 'classic' series of rifle.

If the conquest will have to mounted high because of ocular lens to by handle clearance, I'll probably go back the the trusty 'ol vx-3 in 2.5-8x36 or 3.5-10x40. I know these fit nicely with low leupold rings and usually my go to but thought I'd try something different.

Thanks, Joel

I've got a 3-15x42 HD5 on low Talley lightweight rings on mine. Bolt almost touches but not quite. I had a 4.5-14x44 on it previously with the same rings.

Seeing you're in Winnipeg, I'd take the gun and scope to Cabela's and have them try out something in store.

.....If they had what I was looking for in stock. Nice big new store to go and....order your scope from. PITA.

I think wholesale has what I'm looking for, might just try them.

Not sure if this helps you or not but here's a picture of it with just the Talley rings. I have had my bolt handle slightly shaved down as well.

So I tracked down a conquest. With weaver bases and grand slam mediums, there is a c-hair of clearance between the bolt handle and the ocular lens. I would imagine I'd get a little more clearance with some leupold mediums but I'm happy with the weaver set up for now. Thanks for the help sheephunter.
