338 win mag or 300 win mag

I find it odd that there are those that think that the 300win mag is some sort of animal slaying, fire breathing dragon compared to the 30-06.........yet think there is absolutely no difference in killing power when the 300 is compared to the 338. Is this just 300 owners that want to believe that they have the only supercartridge?

Probably because you can drive a bullet with a comparable sectional density (180gr .308=.271SD, 225gr .338=.281SD, 200gr .308 = .301SD, 250gr .338=.313SD) at anywhere from 130fps (200gr vs 250gr) to 340fps (180gr vs 225 gr) higher velocity out of the 300WM than you can out of the 338 and the 300WM drives the same 180gr Nosler at anywhere from 200-300fps faster than the 30-06. The 300WM has a significantly larger case than the 338 which puts it at a distinct advantage. The 300 can drive it's 220 gr bullet (which no one even uses much anymore) at almost the same velocity that the 338 drives a 250 (about 50 FPS behind) with a much more impressive SD to boot.

The real question is "What could the 338 do with the extra 6 gr (water) capacity that the 300 case has?" Aye friends, that is the question.

Wow, that post is complete nonsense. By the same token, the 270 Win pushes a 150 gr bullet at a higher velocity than the 30-06 pushes a 180 gr., therefore the 270 must be vastly superior.
 
8mm rem mag or 325 WSM, 200 or 220 grain bullets work soooo well out of the .323 platforms!!!

Or maybe its because the way the .300s and .33s are typically loaded there isn't a whole lot of difference in terminal results on North American game. Our animals just aren't that big.

My 26" barrelled .338 clocks + or - 2900 fps with bullets from 215 to 225 grains. My 26" .300s typically run 3150 with 180s. 250 fps goes a long ways towards negating 30 thousandths of bullet diameter. Neither caliber seems to have penetration problems given decent bullet construction so screw the weight difference.

Contrast that to the 30-06/.300. I'm not very shy about stoking up the 30-06, but 2650 with 180s is fairly normal in my rifles. 500 fps difference is pretty hard to ignore on the same bullet.
 
IMHO people should be paying a lot more attention to the bullet used instead of the cartridge launching it. All that really matters is if you can hit your intended target at the distance you shoot, and will the BULLET do its job at the velocity it arrives at. It doesn't matter if it is a 308 Win or a 7mm RUM or a 340 Weatherby, as long as the bullet finds its target and does what is required of it when it gets there. 500 FPS or 5,000 FPS, 2" drop or 20' drop. Use the right bullet for the job and shoot within the rifles and your own ability and you can not go wrong!
