What Classic Pistol should I buy?

Hello All,

Just thinking about getting a single stack 9mm pistol for IPSC Classic Division and was wondering what people are shooting out there and what people like and don't like.

Any suggestions?
 
your budget would be helpful, but without knowing it I'd say an STI trojan, spartan if you want to be a bit cheaper. As much as I like my spartan i'd still say the trojan is worth the extra money
 
When looking at this specifically from the competition perspective, I would think that you don't want .40 for minor in classic as you would be handicapping yourself with 8 round mags. It still has to fit in the box from my understanding. The only reason to run minor in classic is to avoid the 8 round limit set for major and 19 round 9mm mags still fit in the box.

Also, if classic is dropped at the end of 2014, that 1911 can only go to standard or open after that where minor is handicapping yourself again.

If I'm incorrect in my assumptions, please feel free to enlighten me.

I would say consider .40. It's nice to have the option of major or minor.

I run a spartan in 45acp for classic major. I have put close to 10k through it so far with no issues. Trojans are great also for a few more hundred.

With a small amount of filing on the base pads, the Tripp System mags (which will hold 10 S&W rounds) will fit in the box (YMMV depending on the exact configuration of your 1911, especially the sights).

Kyle, you've seen my modified Trojan (blue grip guy). I am having another made for me by RK. I selected 40 again. I load the system mags by Tripp, and have a soft minor load. IF, so inclined by a stage preview before I declare my power factor, I find that the stages and reloads do not warrant 10 round, I could load major. I haven't been doing so, but I like the flexibility.

My wife just moved from her Tanfo standard pistol into an STI USPSA in 9mm. She runs Tripp mags as well (the need tuning but once done, are very reliable). She loves the pistol, and after a trigger job will be perfect. 9mm through the 1911 frame is much different than mine. While my minor set up feels soft and VERY flat, her's (at 129pf N320 rounds) is a little snappier, but very quick feeling (and she prefers that feel, coming from a Standard major pf).

I don't think you can go wrong with either calibre, its basically a matter of your preference and what you may be set up to use (and although I love 45ACP, I am not included to use for high volume competitions....).

Oh, and I can fit the box with my 5" STI and that is with a larger Techwell magwell. The mags are trimmed at the factory to fit. It is a tight fit, but a fit nevertheless.
 
Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware that this would work. A 1911 in 40S&W sounds very appealing. But since I have one in 45, I think another in 9mm would happen before one in 40S&W.

Yea .40 is the way to go unless you are on a serious budget and just need/want to get as much trigger time as possible

Mine is 9mm but ive always got an eye on the EE for a good deal on an sti in .40
 
To the OP, Kyle, what did you settle on? My custom 1911 from RK is finished and am picking it up in Burlington (hopefully) tomorrow night.......40 minor load is the way to go.........
