Texas losing war on feral hogs

The biggest problem is getting on to property. 2 years ago many wanted $50-250 for trespass rights. If things are that bad you would think they would be happy to see us. They are a hard hunt as well, deep in cover and hard to move. They travel at night mostly. Good luck to any that go south. Keep us informed.

I've heard stories of guys crawling through the underbrush on their hands and knees to shoot hogs at close range with handguns. Hard hunt indeed, as much as I would love to go hunting with a pistol I don't know if that would be my cup of tea.

How do feral hogs taste? are they yummy?

Like bacon. I've been at a few wild pig roasts, it's a bit different from domestic pork (get mine organic grain fed from the farm :) ) but still pretty delicious. Best I had was cooked all day long in a pit of coals, the meat literally fell off the bone when we pulled it out.

mmm damn you make that sound really good!! I had wild boar before and didn't like it, smells funny. maybe it's just adjusting to the taste of wild animals? I had deer once, but the cook was amazing, the sauce was great and the meat tasted ok.

Go to youtube and peck in hog hunting. Ted Nugent has a few on there. The operations that got my attention were flying Robinson helos with the shooter hanging out the left side. The pilot flew pretty hard to flush the piggies out, and then the shooters 'expend all rounds' with full auto ARs. One had a particular rule they called 'overkill', which meant the pig had to be really really shot up and dead before the helo would go after another pig. The preparation included taking a helo safety course, a shooting course and no doubt stacks of waivers and disclaimers. Then the shooter had to go home to wait until the flying company got a contract to eradicate hogs. If anyone wants to go slither through the brush like a rattlesnake to maybe snipe one hog, they are welcome to it.

The flavour of wild meat is 90 percent in how it is cooked. Not too many animals are so ridiculously 'gamey' tasting as to be inedible. My favorite is deer tenderloin rubbed with Cabelas wild game spice and wrapped in farm bacon. BBQ'd to a nice pink throughout, there's never leftovers.

Think about it each female can produce upto a dozen piglets.. Multiply that and ouch! Do they breed more then once a year ?

I would like to hunt them some day!

I have a friend in N. Texas that uses a MD500, he has a deal to clean up on about 100,000 acres. He took Ted Nugent hunting a while back, 232 hogs in a day & a half. No shortage of hogs, older ones ain't worth cleaning, and stink about as bad as anything I've ever come across. If you do clean & cook one, it's kinda like chewing your boot.
