on the outside of the container it says to use 20.5 grains for a 280 grain bullet i only have 240's is loading it at 20.5 ok ...(trying to work a load up for deer hunting with the puma 44 mag)

what would you recommend for a deer load

For a 240gr bullet the starting load is 23gr and the max is 24gr of H110. At 20.5gr you might get hang fires and miss fires using H110. You are not supposed to load it below 3% of maximum. All my 44mag rounds are 240gr DRG hard cast bullet with 24gr of H110 and the work flawlessly.
Oh and make sure you use a magnum primer when using H110.

Andrew.

Just shoot the ones you have, they will be fine.
I have done considerable amount of testing with the 44 mag, about 4 different revolvers and two Marlin rifles, with 240 grain bullets.
24 grains is the usual full power load and all you need are standard pistol primers.
Testing in the rifle made it easier to see which were the most accurate loads. In looking at my notes, from both revolvers and rifle, I have tested from 17 grains to 25 grains of H110. Generally, the highest loads were pretty consistent in accuracy, but one of my tests at 17 grains showed about as accurate as any.
On the chronograph H110 or Win 296, all had quite large spreads, from high to low.
That was shy I settled on the original load that Elmer Keith designed for the 44 mag, 22 grains of 2400 powder, standard primers and 240 grain bullets.
For a medium load, maximum of about 1,000 fps, Winchester 231 is extremely accurate.
