Just wondering if it's worth it to harvest bullets from my outdoor range and smelt them for lead, and sell the ingots, and sell the copper jackets to metal scrap.
Might help the club to get money. They need money for the indoor range and I don't really have money to give, so I guess that would help them.

How much do people buy lead ingots for a pound?

If you have alot of people shooting then yes it's likely worth it (assuming your doing it for free). Is it handgun mostly? If it's rile, expect alot of surplus steel core stuff.

As I recall it's typically a bit on the soft side, but still good for pistol rounds. I would say 0.75 to 1.00 per lbs.

Cast boolits would have more info.

Can Am is correct but you have to figure out how much it costs to recover the lead, then melt it down and pour it. Mailing cost will kill any deal.

Mostly, after filling the propane tanks, digging it out of the berms, traveling back and forth, its cheaper to just buy it from the scrap dealers.

If you have a free heat source or several hundred pounds of it to do at once, then you might be able to make a profit on it.

The Vancouver Trap Club used to bring in a machine to scrape the first inch or so of soil from their ranges. They washed the piles and got several 55gal drums of shot. They sold the shot to members that reloaded. The problem was, it wasn't sorted for size and some of it was flat etc.

when the snow melted this spring, there were bullets ALL OVER the place.
they all disapeared.
Apparently no one picked them up, they just ran into the ground.
am I missing something?

Ever brought a kid with you to the range???? They pick up everything left behind. Their pockets are always bulging when they leave.

I pick up stray lead. It's usually a pretty good alloy mix as is.

I then, mix it with wheel weights for a harder cast bullet. The tough stuff to find, is pure lead.

I picked a full coffee can of bullets from our range this spring as things melted .
BTW the shotgun slugs didn't melt in the Lee pot...They sank !??
Also ,regardless if it's wheel weights or cast bullets, it is melting Not smelting !
You can look up definitions youself . :)

I have a few hundred pounds of pure lead if anyone is in need. It is actually a roll of lead sheet.
If this is of any use to any one in the GTA east pm me I'd sell it.
