M305 Range Day Problem

Got to shoot about 20 rounds through my m305 today. The next shot I went to take sounded a quite a bit louder then all the rest so stopped shooting to check out the rifle.

The op rod was forward but the bolt had detached and been left behind. I haven't taken the rifle apart to see if there was any damage. From what I can see without taking it apart everything looks fine. Whats the usual cause of this happening?

I was shooting MFS 145gr ammo.
m305 is sitting in a Sage stock.

I have shot quite a bit of ammo through this gun already and this is the first issue.

Thanks,

How much side to side play is there between the bolt and op rod when the action is closed? Can you pull the charging handle sideways and see the bolt roller?

I have put everything back together now. With the action closed there is very little side to side play. I cannot see the bolt roller by pulling the oprod to the side.

Ok you have a different problem than the issue I had (out of spec op rod) on one of my previous M305's. Hopefully one of the gurus will chime in here.

It seems that the latest ones have issues with loose opp rods. I purchased a shorty with an opp rod so loose that if you pushed down on the handle the roller was no longer in the pocket of the opp rod. I shipped it back, as I deemed it unsafe to shoot. When they called me to discuss the situation they said they had the rifle in hand and said that it is normal and that they are all like that. I told them my three other ones I have are nowhere near that loose. So I told them send my money back if they couldn't find one any better. So I'm out $50.00 shipping. It also had been welded on and had the rear of reciever the looking like it had been ground by hand. I think they hitting the bottom of the barrel for parts and using whatever crap they have left.

Some of these rifles like to kick the oprod up a bit at the rear og the oprod's stroke. The tab is hitting the take down notch and dislodging.
Not saying this is the problem but I've examined at least a dozen rifles now that do this.
Sometimes it's a bent oprod.
Check by using two straight edges. One on oprod arm and one on oprod tube, checking for parralism with top edge of oprod armm vs tube and side edge of oprod arm vs tube.
If it passes, it's not the oprod and that would lead me to examine barrel index and oprod guide position.

If it's a 2012 and newer, I would look for deformaties on the ledge of the receiver the oprod rides on or obvious deformaties under the windage knob near oprod take down notch.

That's all I got ;)
Just re reading first post and with it in a sage chassis, it's highly unlikely that barrel index/oprod guide position is the issue. You also state you've shot this rifle before with no issues.... So, I would be leaning more towards a bent or twisted oprod?

Is this the first time shooting MFS?
I've only ever used it once, but it would stick in my chamber. Run some proper brass casings through it next time and see if it still happens.

Alright, thanks. I will take out my oprod when I get home from work and check it out. It looked fine earlier but I didn't check with a straight edge or anything.

If this is the issue how bad is it to install a new oprod. I have read that they are not really just drop in pieces and have to be fitted.

Nope, this is the only ammo that has ever been shot through this m305. I run the ammo through my shorty with no problems regularly also.

Well.. after taking the oprod out and lining it up with a couple of straight edges I do believe it is slightly bent. Thanks everyone for the help in determining the problem.

Now I have to find an oprod and someone to fit it.

bend it back....they are able to be straightened back if not too much mangled. Really depends where its bent too. There is a guy at Springfield that his only job is to bend/tweak oprods on new rifles.

Yup, this where the child's play ends and the head scratchin begins.
If you want to send it to me and pay return post I'll get her straight for ya ;) My time is free so no worries there ;)
