Wondering if any of the smiths on here can tell me if the Kimber Montana would be suitable for a re-barrel job. I've fallen in love with one after handling it (84L) but have read stories of dismal accuracy out of the box. I think I like the way the rifle handles enough that I would be willing to re-barrel it if it won't shoot. Just want to make sure the action is a good starting point.

It is as good as Ruger mod 77 action b/c Kimber action is made in Prescot Arizona Ruger plant IIRC.
Kimber action is little bit lighter though and Ruger action might be a little stronger.
Take your pick....

the accuracy issues with kimbers usually are not barrel related. your google fu could probably find the usual steps to kimber greatness

Not all of what you hear about the Kimbers are true. They are very picky with ammo, because of the match grade chambers. I've have 2 buddys with them and it took forever to get a load figured that worked, but once the magic load is found they are amazing rifles.
