Hi guys,

Im wondering what I could use in place of Varget? since Cabela's moved in the city (winnipeg), to their new, bigger location, they dont ever have any!!! I got their only pound right when they opened and for three months they havnt had any! Im looking for something i can use in my .308 since it seems theyll never have it again.

any thoughts?

I've had good luck with H4895. It's 110 on the burn rate chart and Varget is at 117. Maybe IMR4895 might be closer, it's 114 on the chart.

I just stop shooting my rifle that relies on varget when I'm out, not really interested in working up a load with another powder.
"Substitute" won't be exact so I'm not fartin around with that. I've heard N140 could be used in place aswell.

Happy shooting.

Vv n140, rl-15, imr 4895, imr 4064, imr 3031

I hear you about running out, I just opened my last 8 lbs jug. I probably only have enough to load another 1000 rounds. Time to go shopping.

RL15 is great in the 308 and offers more velocity then Varget, however, I run VV N550 in my .308 with 168's and 175's and I will never switch back. The N550 is way cleaner and offers more velocity at the same pressure as Varget or RL15.

How is it in 223 for targets..? 100-300M

I used to load match ammo for 4 different 223 target rifles. Even though they had custom barrels made as part of the same batch and were chambered by the same guy using the same reamer, each preferred its own load. All were loaded with the Sierra 80 Match King and all shot well to 1000 yards. I won a 1000 yd match using my son's rifle.

The rifle that liked RL15 used 25 gr for around 2900 fps. That was a 30" barrel with a Wylde chamber.

Lawry's in Caledonia, ON has a few 8lb kegs of Varget left for $196 each and well over 100 1lb cans for $25 each. I just finished getting all my powder for the year so have at it guys.

I got a stash set aside for me. Thanks for the heads up. Now I just got to find my way down there during the week 'cause they don't really do phone/mail order supposedly. ;)
